Okay,

I have no studio at home (yet! :)) and no flash (in for repair). I do have my 50mm though, and some natural light....however, i cant get past these being simply "snaps" of my pets, and not "photos" which stand out. I guess I wont be able to get decent shots without some form of studio setup.

Anyway, C&C and any tips with my limited setup! :D

Also, I used low F numbers to try and blur out the clutter...

I'm a cat lover, and you have really caught a great expression on his face.

Thanks HWG. The potential for pet shots here is awesome, we have 3 lovely cats and Basil. The trouble is, getting them awake and still - not easy! :)

While we were having a holiday here at home in Oxford, Southern England we were stopped three times by Americans on holiday who were missing their Cavaliers, giving me the impression they were popular across the pond:thinking:.

Some people know them (closer to Canada they are) but they are really not very popular. The American cocker spaniel won out here for quite a while. On the whole if you want a decent cavalier you need to import from Canada. I tried but to darned expensive!

"Simply snaps" .... hardly!
The way youve used the light & dof to your advantage definately raises these above simple pet snaps, imo.

I think the colours, light, and composition, is wonderful on all - with the exception of #3, which doesnt sit quite so well with me (him looking out of a tightly cropped frame, too much space to the right).

#1 & #4 are beautiful pet portraits, I think people would be happy to pay good money for shots of their pets like those!

i think you are tempted to call them "simple snaps" just because you are so familiar with the subjects.

Excellent use of DoF, and natural light. Love No 1 but I think Basil 4 is the pick of the set.

I love pets and animals in general so these make up a great set for me! I love a shallow dof for portraits and you've hit that nail on the head...

Gorgeous dog, looks like he could go hyper at any moment though! :D

You don't need a lot of studio kit and fancy lighting, get some decent background material, a white sheet will do to start with and drape it over a long cane /pole. Use a fstop of 2.8 to blur and natural light. Focus on the eye and frame. Practice, practice practice.

Nice images

Thanks
