Went to the BCCC this weekend, at Castle O'er, near Lockerbie.

Great course, great cars, and great drivers.

Here's a few of my pics...

Personally, I don't think slow panning really works for off road...

I don't know what sort of driving this is - is it laps or is it stages like in rally?

What I would hunt out is somewhere that the cars either get some air or kick up some serious dirt/mud/water.

#12 is probably that, but to freeze jumps or flying dirt you need a faster shutter speed - I use 1/500 for MX which is fast enough to freeze dirt and jumps etc but just about on the edge to leave some wheel blur. Obviously that might not be the value for these, but you need to play.

Cheers desantnik,

The racing is over one 10 mile course and they do 10 runs over 2 days.

I did struggle with finding the best shutter speed. I tried to find a setting to give me some wheel blur, but by the time I got that slow, the cars where getting blurry.

Point taken on finding the action areas. The difficulty there is that you're quite restricted to where you can go, 'cos the cars can end up quite a long way from the track at times!

But I take your points, and I'll take them into consideration next time :D

It might well be that you cannot get down slow enough for wheel blur to any degree, so stuff that and just get up around 1/500, catch some flying muck (which gives you the sense of speed) and as a bonus gives you more sharp shots. Look for angles that aren't side on and then people won't complain about the wheels when they see them on tog forums :D

Nice set, I like number 8.

Number 5 is my favourite, number 7 would have been a fav too if you had, as desantnik observed, used a faster shutter speed to catch some flying mud.

Nice work though :)

You're definitely right. I need to go with a faster shutter. I guess I'm almost there with my motorsport, and half of the point of this weekend was to find out where I'm going wrong. I was too hung up on getting movement in the wheels. Not sure how to go about getting angles to hide the wheels though, as I don't really like head-on shots, so the flying mud option is probably the way to go. Cheers for your help, and if I get to Perthshire in a fortnight for more of the same kind of event, I'll be sure to post up my efforts. :D

Cheers Matt, glad you like

Cheers Flash In The Pan. As I've said to desantnik, I guess I'm NEARLY there. But glad you see some good in them :D
