After much discussion between the Site Staff, we have finally agreed the new image size rules we want to implement.

So

Image Sizes
All images hosted off site should be 800x and 200kb max
All images hosted on the gallery site will remain at 800x and 160kb, we decided on this as the amount of space required is already very large, increasing the sizes further would be a very large drain on slim resources, but with no real obvious effects on image quality. To illustrate this Matt prepared these shots:

200Kb

160KB

120kb

100kb

So to clarify, Off site hosted 200kb, TP Gallery hosted, 160kb

we hope that this is better for some of you guys, as always your views are welcome! :)

Sounds good to me, not much point changing the edge sizes IMHO as most other sites have exactly the same restriction, so atleast its simpler to share images.

Good to see that it has been seriously considered for its pros and cons atleast:)

No complaints here.

2 things though.
The sample above has a lot of motion blurred areas and solid colours so it will compress better than say a leafy forest shot so it is not a completely fair illustration.

And can we clarify why there is a limit on off site picture file sizes? Is it purely for dial-up users to speed page loading? Only asking as I have seem much larger file sizes on other sites.

off site limit for page loading speed only really, even on broadband some sites crawl when there are a few large images, so its convinience more than anything else, and also, someone on the forum still uses dial up! stand at the back BT for not getting that mans line sorted!
