Im thinking about getting the grip for my 400D, it seems that a lot of people are saying that if you have large hands, its a must. It also makes the camera look more professional.

There seems to be a few around and Im thinking that the cheap Hong Kong versions will not be all that good and the build quality will be pretty poor. Is this true? How does it 'meet up' with the camera, for example is there a massive gap between the grip and body or does it look like its part of the camera.

The other question is what other functions does the grip have. From what I can tell all they have is an extra shutter release, is there anything else like a shutter/apature wheel or something?

There seems to be a lot of third party grips around and im tempted by getting one of those, especially one that has more buttons on the back, but then at the end of the day, if the build quality is crap then I dont want to waste my money.

Any help and advice is very welcome, thanks in advance.

I've got the Canon grip for the 350D, and there's a wheel on there as well as a couple of function buttons.

What do the function buttons do?

And, the wheel is for the shutter/ap etc right?

In hongkong versions there is no extra buttons. Yes it has a button for vertical shoot but in most versions its only working using IR light to trigger the camera in remote control mode ... so it mostly for additional weight and battery capacity and of course looks bigger :)

The canon one for the 400D has the same buttons as what are by the shutter and top of camera on shutter side, ie - function wheel, shutter button, + and - buttons and also there is a grip on and off button. I found the canon one to be excellant when I had a 400D, certainly made the camera feel better balanced and also you had double the battery life, very good investment.
