Shot on a Canon 5D and 50mm f/1.4 using window light.

Other technical stuff:

1/30 sec, f/2.0, ISO 500
Saved as RAW, opened in Photoshop CS3 using the RAW plug-in, default settings
Applied Unsharp Mask (default setting)
Converted to grayscale, then to Duotone, and a Pantone quadtone preset applied

I find it much easier to get sharp hand-held shots in available light using the nifty fifty than my heavy 28-70 zoom..

:)

Very nice quality indeed. One of the best B&W conversions I've seen and technically superb. Strong Blacks and excellent highlight detail.

Relaxed and natural pose with strong eyes and expression. My only gripe would be the location/background. I would love to see this with a less distracting background.

Did she like it?

Thanks!

This was shot in a pub over lunch, and wasn't posed in any way.

I've got into the habit of taking my 5D with the nifty fifty attached whenever I meet up with friends, family etc. Using a 5D with a high ISO and wide aperture means I can shoot virtually anywhere in available light without a flash.

I'm a big fan of Jane Brown (http://arts.guardian.co.uk/features/story/0,,1722998,00.html), the Observer portraitist, who only ever used a 35mm SLR, 50mm lens and available light.

Mum-in-law was having a conversation with someone on the other side of the table, and I just took a couple of snaps. So nothing I could do about the wall :)

Maybe I'll get whizzy in Photoshop and lighten the brickwork to lessen the impact.

Mum-in-law hasn't seen it yet... she'll probably think she looks horrible :D

Excellent pose. Those nifty fifties are good as this shot demonstrated.

When I took some unposed nifty fifty shots of my mother-in-law, she hated them and told me I had made her look old. She's closing in on 86.

nice shot :) A quick question on processing. Should I be applying an unsharp mask to all of my images? and what sort of settings should I use? (there's a bit of sharpening goes on when u convert from RAW into photoshop right?)

most impressed
has the look of an old (warm) bromide about it

(some here are old enough to understand these words
to the others - analogue black and white print technology!)

Lovely and natural, B+W convert suits the shot

Nice to see your mother-in-law smiling, don’t think they’ve made a camera with a fast enough shutter for me to do that with mine ;)
