Just activating mine now.
16GB model and there were plenty available.
Yup, was at the O2 store in Yeovil at 7:20. They had enough for the 30-40 people who had queued up. Was taking an age to upgrade though as the systems at Apple, O2 & CPW were down :(

Same here on the delays.
I was at the Derby O2 store at 8am. 7th in the queue.
There was even a queue in sleepy old Taunton, about 20 folks waiting as I went past this morning.

i got one too, in aberdeen at 6:45 11th in que. problem was that they only got 5 16gb iPhones so nearly everyone else had to get an 8 GB, going to be a week or so before they get back in stock, so just went for the 8GB.
problem is i am at work and cant activate it :'( today is going soooo slow

hopefully mine is waiting for me at home. But you never know with dhl
Heh, had plenty of both 8 & 16's. Went for the 16 in the end, don't know why though I only ever have 3Gb on the old one ...

Beginning to feel that I am the only person in the known universe who feels cheated and underwhelmed by the whole iphone thing.....
Unless you're either
a) deranged
b) clinically insane
c) employed by apple
d) devoid of an original iphone......
Why would you want to extend 18 months of phone contract for a phone that struggles to do phone like things......
OK, it's a sexy gadget, but in real money terms...... ??????????????
(Oh, should mention that I already have a non 3g one..... it's rubbish)

No you're not. It's a personal thing. I love it and have a load of disposable income so picked one up. Not worried about the 18 month contract as if I don't like it I'll do the usual of buying a new phone sim free.
Same as everything really, some little tard spotted it and said have they improved the camera yet? Dunno dullard I bought a phone not a camera, why would I spend £3k on a body and use my iPhone FFS.
I use a lot of the features which are offered on the other models but are not implemented well so feel it's worth paying the cash for it :)

You actually put this so much more eloquently than I tried to......
Should clarify that I'm happy with the performance of the unit itself, can't see a pressing need for 3G, and quite disappointed (or frustrated) in that there are some really useful applications available to "enhance" the user experience, but because they aren't sanctioned by Apple, you have to bend or break rules to make things work the way you want them to....
Summary
iPhone = sexy kit
upgrade = no rush
potential to be better - Huge.

seems to me its just like Apple Macs.. You wither swear by it or hate it. I think if you like Macs you will like the iphone. By that i'm guessing you use Windows on your PC.
Extending the 18 month contract works out nicely.
I bought my 2G iphone 2 months ago for £100 on 18 month contract. I kept it prestine as i had a feeling i might need to sell it when a rumoured 3G version came out. So I just paid £100 for the 3G and sold the 2G for £150.
Considering all the 2G owners thought they would have to buy out their current contracts to get the 3G i reckon its all pretty good

First downside of the new phone (and the version 2.0 software it seems) it breaks the contacts/call history functionality of the BMW iDrive system. 1.1.4 on my original phone worked perfectly.
Time to drop an email to Apple/BMW me thinks!

I use windows because all my clients use windows - If I never see a windows PC again it would be the happiest realisation of my life (and yes I need to get out more and take some photos). I love the MAC I get to play with on the odd occasion - Windows woes are doubled when using MAC (or Apple) stuff.
I do like the phone, but get frustrated that it could be so much better. Can't quite get my head around this frenzy for 3G when (in my humble opinion) the ability to forward sms, ability to receive and/or send mms, would be so much more user friendly.
I had jailbroke the old one and quite liked that I could record video, use it as a spirit level/torch etc. etc. and will no doubt be upgrading when stocks have stabilised. I just can't see the need to queue from stupid o'clock in the morning, for a relatively minor improvement.
I don't want to get embroiled in a MAC vs Windows thing, as plainly the MACs are better all round. Just think that the iphone is a bit of an Apple cop-out.....

MMS will be a thing of the past soon.. Most phones wil be able to e-mail pics which is better and cheaper

Secretly jealous that I never had time to queue this morning !
Don't you need to use the "paperclip" tool to get the sim out of your old one and swap it with the new one? - I know they had trouble with activating new contracts this morning, but an upgrade should be a straight sim swap, plus aggravated re-install of anything you had before (like email accounts etc.)
Agree with the MMS Sentiment as well, but hionestly can't see some of my porn wielding mms mates getting to grips with email let alone paying extra for the priviledge. Hopefully will stand corected over time, but we are talking about people that think the internet is something that fishermen use to separate dolphins from tuna.....

a 21mm lens was abnormally wide, AF was almost unheard of and people used to miss shots because they hadn't wound on the camera. :D:D

With most of .mac AWOL, no iSync and iDisk all gone for a wander today too, it's a bit of a dropped nad for apple. :(

Iphone, one of the coolest looking gadgets for years. Vastly overrated, and doesn't really stand up against other top range "communication devices" such as the N95 or even some of the XDA units (IMPO).
The new Sony Ericsson C902 looks like a very tasty bit of kit, and it'll probably work too ;)

My software on my antique 2G iphone is 1.1.4 and I want to bring it up the todays 2.0 release, but itunes 7.7 says 1.1.4 is the latest release.
I'm getting the feeling like they've restricted the upgrade path until all the demand has leveled.
typical....first I can't get a 3G and then I can't get the updated software.

something i just noticed is that you can use any headphones on the new iphone.
on the old one you had to have special ones that would fit in the socket
i work with PDS's, Iphones etc all day every day setting them up - dont see why people want the iphone personally. im happy with my simple cheap yet fully working sony ericsson
As a freelance photographer its great to get email on the go wherever I am. Oh sure I could have that on my k800i but the interface is horrible. The k800i designed for dialing numbers more than anything. The iPhone has been designed with the internet in mind. Like on Monday. I was driving about all over the place from meetings to shops getting supplies. All the while my email was pushed to the phone and when something came in I could check it out and reply in an easy way. I didn't have to type on a fiddly keyboard or drive all the way home to find that I had to go all the way back. Its one device instead of 2. I've got my favourite tunes on there for when I'm out and about. I've got my portfolio on it too to wow people on the street. If I don't have an image on there I can get it from my website. It fits in my pocket better than my k800i too. GPS for those times when I just can't find the building I'm looking for. The odd game for when I'm bored waiting for something. I quite enjoyed playing Bomberman earlier in the dentists. Its got a fantastic interface. Its just a modern phone. Everything else seems so old with their 9 digit keypads and tiny screens. Its freedom from the desk in a way that the laptop can't provide.
But of course if you're not me or one of the other people who bought it for their own personal reasons then you won't see why we wanted one :p
Must admit i did consider the iphone, for many of the reasons mentioned. But i stuck to the n95 as i didnt like the touch screen, nor the waiting time. Having the GPS on the n95 is great and is used most days, saves me having to carry a satnav and setting up particularly as i have a car for personal use, and a company van too.

the one thing that put me buying an iphone originally is that i thought it would be too common.
so its pretty good that a lot of people dont want one.
i dont know about you guys, but i've had a lot of mobile phones in my time.. they nearly always are below par. on the smarter phones the processors can never keep up with the OS or software.
Windows Mobile 5 was terrible.. then i upgraded it to WM 6 and they hadnt fixed any bugs and just changed the interface colours!
The iphone is by a long long way the best phone i've ever had.

another thing...does the sim card ahve anything to do with it...i.e do you have to have a "3g sim"
because mine came with a "3g sim" and i put that bugger in and nothing happened...put my old one in that i have had for years and she worked straight away...
im on contract and have been with 02 for donkeys...they never said to keep my old sim or put this new one in...i presumed since they sent a new one that i had to put that in
badgerbaiter
20-07-2008, 16:15
it def needs to be a 3G sim, but the sims that were in the 2G iphone were 3G sims so you should be OK.
So, long as you have a symbol next to the signal strength that says 3G then you should be on a 3G network

E is EDGE
Is there a setting that turns the 3G on?
I still haven't managed to track one down.
Getting a bit annoyed with bugs in V2.0 software though :(
The screen doesn't always rotate is the phone hasn't been used for a while
inputting text if the screen is zoomed in makes the screen go nuts
inputting text can be laggy....especially passwords
and the camera seems to take an age to come on now
I've suffered this since the 2.0 software and looking around the net shows other owners of 2 and 3G iphones have the same issue and apple are already working on an update.

Sooooooooo, does anyone have a fully working, totally functional and non glitching 3g phone then?
I don't think that such a device exists :(
I still have server not responding messages, error 302 in safari , no 3G and still laggy.
I also still have the weird screen jumping thing when typing a post if the screen is expanded
Not that impressed with the change tbh apart from the GPS and the extra 8gb

I was reffering to Macman from Cydia (Jailbreak installer app)

i think my 2G one had less issues than this 3G one
i've had quite a bit of buginess on this iphone
the funny thing is that even with these issues its still by far the most reliable and usefull phone i've ever had
The updated Last.fm app is WAY better than before. It buffers so much faster and doesnt crash... still no scrobbling, but that probably wont ever happen.

mine is working proper now...
even though i was told to put my old sim card in...i had to port my number to the new sim card...
old sim was not worthy of the iphone...
everyone who has the iphone needs at least the phone saber app and shazzam...midomi is cool also

I've said it before and I'll say it again. So's your face :p
Carphone Warehouse were determined to prevent me from having an iPhone. Two weeks of misinformation, missed promises and downright lies. I've never come across a supplier with such contempt for a paying customer.
So I cancelled the order on Tuesday and midday today I just happened across an O2 outlet that had a couple 16gb phones in stock. The deed was done, but it took ages as the prats at CW entered my order onto the O2 system - this morning, two days after I cancelled.
I'll probably end up with four :(

glad you've got one blue, it's a great device.
Don't let the software niggles put you off it, 2.0.1. Isn't far away :)
Actually 2.1 isn't far away. Its been sent out to developers along with the push API.

i'm sure i was told that O2 bills are emailed to the account owner now instead of sent through the post. As i am only 10 days into my contract i have not had my first bill yet, so can anyone confirm this for me.
Thanks
Chris

Yes they are emailed.
Also, for anyone that uses it, you can now use MSN,ICQ etc on the iPhone using Palringo from the app store. Oh, and like all good iPhone apps, it's free!

oh didn't know you could use msn on it...... I'll never use all my texts now :D
2.0.1 needs to solve some major bugs for me
Safari gets stop errors 302 a lot
Safari also tells me the server has stopped responding....lies !!!!!!!!!
Safari has a weird screen issue if posting a quick reply with the main window zoomed in
Key board is laggier on v2.0 than it was on 1.1.4
I get the odd accelerometer issue from wake up to, but it doesn't seem as bad on the 3g as it was on the v2.0 2g

Perhaps what I really need is a bakerlite iPhone with a rotary dial input.
And now the RotaryDialer App for iPhone comes with authentic sound ... ;) ... and it works ... :suspect:
Well nearly ...

Only thing I could whinge about if I was minded (but I'm NOT ...) ... is the battery life is noticeably shortened ...

I'm not seeing any real difference in battery life between 2G v1.1.4 and 2G V2.0.0 and even 3G v2.0.0
Anyone who needs a hard case to save the pretty little phone from being damaged ,I can recomend the griffin wave :)
Decent case size wise and it has a touch through screen protector.
