iv had my canon 400D for just over a week, it came with a 17-55mm lens and already im wanting to upgread my lens, something i can stand far away and zoom in on animal, wildlife, people with out being right up in there face or something. when i say far away i dont mean a mile im talking reasonble distence. anyways if someone know of a lens that be an up grade but not to advance for a newbie thanks.

something around the 70-300 range would be good i'd imagine...but as it's a canon,it doesn't have image stabilisation built into the body,so go for a lens that has it(IS that is)in the canon range,or sigma tamron if they do them...

When I got my 400D I bought it with a Tamron 70-300. It's in my signature. RRP £200 but you can get it online for about £110. It's a nice all round lens I have used it for Sports, Candids and Macro. It would compliment your kit lens nicely.

As always the best advice would be to spend your well earned on the best glass you can afford. There are sometimes other zooms with similar focal lengths and better quality going 2nd hand on here...

I use a Sigma 70-300 APO lens atm. Very capable lens and great value for money. Check out the rugby and cricket shots in my links - most are with the 70-300 lens.

Also, look here for good prices: http://www.camerapricebuster.com/

^^I wouldn't - Argos overprice a lot of stuff so that's probably more of a £100 lens. Probably not great optics wise either (although I have no experience of the lens at all) and probably designed with film in mind.

have a look at the Sigma 70-300 APO lens. I have it on my 400D and its about £150 new. Its a great lens to learn technique with. Cant really get much better for the budget. I have done a kenyan Safari with it to great success.

This (http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product/default.aspx?sku=12856) is only a few quid over budget. I'm not a Canon user, but I know someone who uses this lens and he's pretty pleased with it.

Yeh my mate has just bought the 55-250 IS. It's a nice lens and he got a couple of good shots at the British GP @ Silverstone last weekend.

Agreed, Canon 55-250mm IS is great lens for the price. Knocks the socks off my old Sigma (non-APO) 70-300mm.
