I prefere the B+W image, but i feel the end of the bar lets this image down ( the "bits" )

Prefer B&W too and its a tiny tiny bit off the horizontal - but great idea and a great bit of processing to b&w

Thanks very much for the feedback. Have straightened the images and tidied those ends. Do they look any better

I like the colour version, because it's so close to the B&W, if that makes sense. Well it did to me as I wrote it.

My question is, what is casing the shadow on the weight to the bottom? If you did this again, could you get the image without the shadow?

I have to be different. I prefer the colour one. Although I'm viewing it on a tiny iPhone screen!

Now you've edited it I like the colour version Just think the blue sort of relates to cold steel! Also the colour gives it a bit more 'omph'! A great unusual composition, great focus and Dof.

Thanks for the positive comments folks much appreciated :)

RH I think that shadow may be moi or the tripod. I am intending to have another go just wanted to get some feedback on whether it was worth the effort. I quite like them or the idea so will be trying again at the weekend :)

Unusually for me, I prefer the colour one. I like the effect of the toning colours - to me it looks like a b&w image that's had a filter added to give the colour. The colour suits the subject matter.

I agree with rh1944 that the shadow at the bottom is a bit distracting, but I think a crop to make it more of a panoramic would solve that and make a stunning image. That would also move the bar onto the lower third of the pic. :)

its silly how the little things cn just take your eyeaway from the image, i never look into detail when i take a picture and regret it when processing the raw's!

Jeangenie - the colour is as taken no filters. Glad you like it. I think you're dead right about cropping just scrolled the image down the screen and saw what you mean so will go back and edit it again :)

Gazedd I noticed a shadow when I was taking the shots but thought I'd eradicated it. I do try and pay attention to detail but you're right sometimes when concentrating on getting other factors right you miss some of the finer details :)

I think I'd prefer a reshoot to a crop of this to some panoramic free form aspect ratio. It's one of the sad manifestations of suffering from NonStandardAspectRatioPhobia: it can't affect you as only grumpy old men get it because they are bound by tradition.

The colour version is still the better in my opinion.

Thanks Russell I am going to have another go at the weekend. I have more ideas too. We have plenty of weights to play with in our house :)

I think both versions are excellent, I preferred the b/w version at first, but the more I look at the colour version the more I like it

What about grumpy old women, rh? Is it something I should look out for? :bat: :D

I never knew women could be grumpy! I am sure that it can't affect you. You'd need to think that there was an artistic reason for the aspect ratios and that years of tradition held for something.

You do the great photographer thing and I'll do grumpiness - that'll optimise out output.

I prefer the B&W.

The phallic symbolism is quite effective with this theme.

I know you're right - but I can't help trying to re-invent the wheel, over and over again. :amstupid: - and grumpy at times. :D

Even at our grumpiest, I think we'd find it hard to give DD a bad time over her output. Her standard is exceptional in terms of emotion and technique. We're lucky that she shares her images with us.

I agree, rh. I wasn't criticising - I just thought a crp in this instance would be interesting. DD is one of the people on the site whose pics never fail to impress me. I am constantly amazed at the superb quality of pics we are lucky enough to see on TP and I feel I learn something everytime I browse around. :)

I agree. Crops can be interesting. What I don't like is when people rely on the crop and the post prod to eliminate mistakes which were in the original because of sloppy cameraship. I also don't understand why people will crop away two thirds or more of the original shot; if that's what they need to do then why take the original at all - try and take what you crop to.

None of which applies to DD and her fabulous photos - great, great work.

I think the colour version gives the image more wieght (no pun intended). I had found myself nodding in agreement with RH1944 when he said about the greyscale version having the effect of making the colour one "pop" out more when both images are stacked on top of each other.
Even though I was more attracted to the colour version, both images (before and after) are of superb quality in any case. Good work!
