Macro lens give out 1:1 magnification.

I managed to get 5:1 magnification, not with the macro lens but with 18-55mm 'normal' lens and one extension tube!

oh i made a mistake it should be 1x (1:1) and 5x (5:1).

1X would mean life-size, 0.5X would mean a half of life-size, 0.25X a quarter of life-size... And i managed to get 5x with the cheap lens (18-55mm) great innit?

erm....

well done?

:O it is my first time!

Yeh, Yeh, we know what the figures mean and what extension tubes can do. Are you trying to say tubes are better than a dedicated Macro lens??

To shoot at anything other than full open would be very awkward though as you would need to have the lens stopped down and then remove it from the camera meaning you will be trying to focus through a very dim viewfinder.

It gives you high magnification but at a great cost to usability.

That is appreciated but if you don't know, ask. I don't profess to be an expert but I have used tubes, lens attachments and a year ago, upgraded to a dedicated Macro lens. We  are more than willing to pass on info and tips but first the questions must be asked.

In your original post you make a couple of statements, that is why I said I didn't understand.
