Fifth in the series looking at the past and present in my home town.

Another view of Kirkgate from around 100 years ago, the two pubs (near left) 'The Whittakers arms' and 'Red Lion' are still with us.

It'a fascinating to see how familiar places looked 100 or so years ago, and the old photos often throw up some interesting details. In another 100 years people will probably be exclaiming over the current photos and saying how much the town has changed. :)

One point that's struck me about this set is - if global warming is a modern phenomenon why, in the old photos, do all the shops have their awnings out??

The whole series are worthy of a place in your local museum, I have found them fascinating to view and I'm sure your towns inhabitants young and old would.
The amazing thing is due to your expertise you must have been standing in precisely the same spot in all the shots.

This is a great idea which you have done masterfully. They demonstrate how progress is not always for the better and that we're not smarter than our predecessors.

Very interesting! As part of a location recce for period film i've had to research how things looked around 100 years ago or so, often comming accross very early photographs of streets we walk down today. Its always interesting to see how things have changed and these photographs are a great example of this.

Towns looked so much nicer back then without all the road signs and cars!

Superb again Les. If you don't me asking, where do you find the "then" photos?

Interesting comparisons, nice work. ..makes me wander why we don't have sun awnings anymore, our streets look somehow drab against those old views.

Superb again Les. If you don't me asking, where do you find the "then" photos?

A few sources-old books from the library (ensuring the images are out of copyright), images in the public domain , and my (elderly) neighbour provided some that her father took in the 30-40's

Thanks, I'm finding 'standing in the same spot' is getting easier, as long as there is nothing in the way (road signs etc), where I still struggle is the perspective, getting a similar focal length is a challenge, and I've had to go back on occasion to re-do.

Hi Les
I just loved the first shots you were near as dammit to the original hope you dont mind but put the two together to see how close they were, not far off only a small adjustment to match them together

Wow, that's great, leave it there-don't you dare remove it , it's not that often I get things spot on, I need the hard evidence :) ;)
