View Full Version : Glen Brittle, Isle of Skye
Found this place down Glen Brittle on my resent holiday to Skye. It was quite a crappy morning weather wise but the light was changing rapidly so it was a challenge to try and get things like the exposure right, one minute it was dull as the mist rolled over the Cullins and the next there was a blast of light piercing through highlighting the mountainside.
So with in mind I put in Cokin P164 polarizer to take any reflection of light off the water and a strong Cokin P121ND8 grad to cope with strong light when it did appear through the mist. With this set up I sat waiting for the light to appear that I would be happy with and show what an awesome place this can be be in the right light and hopefully the result here shows this to you.

Gonna agree with all the comments and say that this a belter of a photo that will pay you dividends for years to come. You approached it rationally and worked to get it right in camera. The results of your efforts are there for all to see.
That a cracking shot. Brilliant.

Atmosheric.
Jealous....
I agree absolutely brilliant
I can't add any more to what has already been said.

That really is a sensation. I have been wondering all day how much PP is invovled in getting an image to look this good. Obviously it is technically excellent and would look fab straight of the card but the exposure blending (??) of the rocks and water make it dazzle

If I return from my September trip to Skye with an image like that I would be well chuffed...........but I won't:(
Nice work! Well worth the wait to get it. I've been there and never got anything this good. Superb mood with the clouds, and the colour of the water & stream bed are just great. The shaft of sunlight does look a tad dodged though, but hey - who cares!

Superb :clap::clap:
Best picture I've seen on here for a long time! Any HDR involved? (not a criticism just a question)
Without a doubt - one of the best landscape shots I have seen on TP in quite a while. The foreground is just superb
You don't need me to tell you how good this is Alex.
Captures the drama of the highlands perfectly.
Where was this at Glen Brittle? I've never really ventured further than the beach down there!
fantastic! print it, frame it, stick on a wall!

Awesome shot, well thought out and executed, the moodiness of the clouds for me are better than blue sky.

Like everyone else said... STUNNING... its what myself and probably everyone else aspire to.take the ultimate shot well done
Thanks folks, I really appreciate ALL the feedback that I get.

Also here is a run down on how I processed the single image from start to finish.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e126/zander202/Processing.jpg?t=1217110716
The first one is straight out of the camera with no editing at all.
The second is how it looks after doing adjustments in C1 to the RAW file.
Exposure: Corrected by 0.34
Saturation: 28
Highlights: 50
Levels: Black Slider moves to 5
Curves: Auto setting for Mid-Tones Darker
Converted to 16bit Tiff
Finally in CS3
A levels layer applied to both the sky and FG separately, likely making a slight 'S' shape
Color Balance, shadows, mid tones and highlights
Dodged the rocks in the MG at 3%
Burned the mountains in the BG a little, again at 3%
Cloned over the blown highlights in the sky at about 5%
Looks quite a lot when it's written down, but it was lucky if it took 5mins from start to finish :0)

This has a lot going for it, and your approach was spot on 99%, the only thing preventing this image from being outstanding rather than very good, are the nearest rocks are slightly OOF, (shooting at f16?), a slight crop wouldn't effect the balance (I don't think)
I know Glen Brittle, and just how challenging it is, particularly the changeable weather.
Wow! sensational pic! well done.
I don't like the bottom right corner. But that's a corker of a shot, as you know.

Sorry to buck the trend, but,in my opinion only, the finished article looks over processed and unnatural.I am not saying that it is bad and do appreciate all the thought and effort that has gone into it.The rocks in the foreground look false in thier colour and the rocks just behind the water stand out too much.
From what I can see of the original, that looks far better and I would love to see that at full size?
I like the natural look much more, but that is just me..........:)

Absolutely stunning! :clap::clap::clap:
Hi Les, the only rocks that look OOF are the ones under the water. Used f/16 as the distance for the FG to the BG wasn't all that great. Appreciate your comments as always.
fracster, it was shot in RAW and we all know that RAW files need editing. Trust me the finished image is how it looked when I took the photo, if you've been to Skye then you will know that all the rivers running from the Cuillins are like this ... just beautiful ;)
Thanks everyone for the comments.
Well i think this is stunning! I'd be soooo happy if i'd shot this!
Everyone's tastes are different and some people just like to see images as they come out of the camera...even though we all have to do something to them afterwards whether it be up the saturation or contrast. Well that's ok, but in my experiance, the most outstanding images are the ones that look slightly different to how the eye would normally see the scene. I think you did a great job on this!
You obviously know how to take a cracking lanscape shot, so keep up the good work and i for one will look forward to seeing more of your stuff! Thanks for sharing you pp work with us. :)

Not only is that an awesome shot, but you are a star for sharing such a perfect guide to the PP. You have no idea how helpful it is, as you have highlighted to me anyway, several things which I have never even considered in PP.
Your out of the camera pic would have had be hitting the roof with excitement.
Love it,
Gary.
Fantastic scenic

A stunner is all I need to say. Well done worth the trip to Skye...:thumbs::thumbs:
WOW - that is an excellent image - it just draws your eyes from front to back :clap::clap:
Just out of interest was this a one off or one from a sequence of shots? The reason I ask is that it would be interesting to see just how much of an effect the light played in producing a corker ;)
Thanks also for sharing your PP.
