Got the opportunity to try out something new today, and try my hand at panning with fast moving 'things' prior to next weekend's Sunderland Airshow. I'm quite pleased with the results, but would like to hear from those more knowledgable...

FYI, it was at Malton Show, North Yorkshire. The Bold Dog FreeStyle MotoX Stunt Team. A very impressive display and some rather long lenses on display at the event too. Talk about feeling inadequate!

Shot manual, using Canon 70-300 IS. This is a portrait crop from a landscape image (if that makes any difference to peoples thoughts/opinions).

As usual, just click the image to go biggr on flickr!

That's brilliant that is. I'd like to see it a bit bigger though --------------------------------bugger, I should read the damn things before I start typing.

Ah but, I've looked at it on flickr and it's the same size.:naughty::naughty:

I like it a lot, looks like the shutter was slow enough to capture some of the movement in the wheel but deliver a crisp overall image.

Ah, that's it now. Even better on a larger scale. Superb:thumbs::thumbs:

Wow, great capture. Was that the frame taken, or have you cropped from a larger frame. If thats as taken without cropping, thats just superb.

 ... If you've not tried that before I have to say the result is awesome ... ... what would it be like if you practiced at it ... ;)

Yes, genuine first time trying this. As I said, it is cropped though! Not vertically, it was landscape originally and the sides have been cropped off. I tried panning with the camera vertical, but wasn't at all happy.

Is there a 'preferred' way to present shots like this? I agree a bit of 'ground' would have given a sense of height, but they were quite high so the shot would have been 50% empty.

You will get told alot to include some of the ground.. but if the rider is high (in the air, not on drugs) then he will be alot small in the shot.
In this case.. who cares how high he his.. thats an imressive stunt at any height.
Great capture.

Well for a first attempt I'd say that you've set the bar a little high for yourself:lol: Thats a cracking capture mate:thumbs: I must admit I like this sort of shot without any ground in the frame....but thats just me;)

Added some more shots like this in thread here (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=73350) just to prove it wasn't a fluke. :D
