Just been practicing while I wait for my Sigma 105mm macro to be delivered :woot:

First is taken with my sigma 70-300mm dof of field not the best due to low light etc.

The other two were taken with my nikkor 28-80mm which I find sharper than the the sigma 70-300

I know there are all sorts of things not right about them, the irritating gammy bit on the one rose for instance, and the over processing on the other and its distracting bright green leaf. The dof and point of focus I think are off as well. But the shots are about practice and learning from my mistakes.

I just wanted to share my extremely large learning curve. Boy isn't there a lot to learn

They look pretty good to me if this is the early stuff :)

The colour and detail in #1 look great against that background!

Of the two roses I prefer the 2nd for the light and the colour!

Very nice trio of shots!

I'm going with the expert. They're all great.

I like the last one....the colour makes it just slightly abstract.

A good little experiment to help you along whilst you're waiting for the 105.

Try shooting something like the rose at all possible f-stops but using the same composition and focus (you may need to up the ISO as you progres). You'll be able to see the effects of the DOF getting larger as you stop down and then diffraction setting in as the aperture gets too small. Somewhere in there you'll find the stop that gives the effect you want.

Wow thanks guys :D

I know I've got a long way to go but its early days and I'm learning so much. This forum has been fantatastic for keeping me motivated.

Bazz it was your lightbox set up that helped a great deal. I'm still experimenting and at the moment I'm trying out the laundry basked from M&S as my lightbox and using two 35 watt desk lamps (not sure they are bright enough as they are energy saving bulbs but thats for a different thread!)

Bob, thanks for the tip. I'll try that today

Great! I feel encouraged by your comments. I needed that, I was going through a phase of 'I'm never gonna beable to do this' :bonk:

Lol! I was actually thinking about my electicity bill more than the planet  I take it they're not the right ones to use then  Which bulbs should I be using then - bearing in mind my lamps are 40w max?

I use 40W clear bulbs, (not spots).

Then adjust the white balance in PS to remove the yellow cast.
