I got myself a new macro lens, it was recommended by Alby.

It took me a while to catch anything reasonable, and that only after rechecking his hints on usage. Case of only read the instructions, just before you consign it to the bin.

So far I'm not getting really close, and the focus and dof leave a lot to be desired. But I thought I'd put my first efforts up for criticism, and hopefully tips on how to greatly improve.

Thanks for looking :)

This one of the ball in a ball point pen. Should have remembered Albys advice about a diffuser :bonk:

Nice start Anthony, I would suggest using flash with those manual settings and make yourself a diffuser to give you less harsh light. Some nice hoverflies you found there.

Thanks everyone for your comments, very encouraging :)

Yes Alby, I realised afterwards one of the mistakes was not using the flash with the manual settings, I'll forget to push the button next :bonk: :bonk:

And as you say a diffuser is a must. I'll make one up this evening.

I've allready taken some with the flash, and there is an large improvement

I'l put them in a seperate thread.

And thanks again all :)

Good kick off Anthony! Flash will help a lot! Are these tripod mounted or hand held?

The hoverflies are great - insect of the month on here it seems :D

Keep 'em coming :D

Thanks :)

Hand held John, as can be seen from this rejected one, taken with flash :)

The hand wobble caused his front legs to be cropped. Whats left is still disgusting enough though, definitly not to be viewed at meal times.

Wow that last one is (almost) a stonker - great and revolting detail :)

Allmost is a word I'm fast become more familiar with

Do you use a tripod?

With this lens I have to move the camera back and forth, so maybe a unipod would help.

These are better than my first attempts were at macro - that fly would've been super if not for the front legs... Macro, addictive and frustrating in equal measure I think!
