I currently own the Sigma 17-70 & was considering looking for a superior replacement but to be honest I'm very pleased with the lens in general. It does suffer a bit of distortion at the wide end though which was the main reason for replacing it...
however it seems to make more sense in adding a Sigma 10-20 to my kit instead, I guess that distortion in the 14/18mm range is quite low ?
Would appreciate some feedback from current owners
thanks

Great lens - love mine - loads of distortion! I mean, look at how this building looks :

It's also pretty good for close-ups too!...not quite upto Rolls Royce's Angel standard admittedly, but this statuete appeared on the bonnet of a really battered Cuban car last summer.

Hmmm, I'm also looking into buying one. Would be interesting to hear people's opinions

Hmmm,
Daves post has put me off a little, the distortion pattern seems very strange-- tower bridge looks perfectly straight :naughty:
Must admit I've read quite a bit already on this one & my mind is almost made up, just need to find the best price now !!

It's a good all round lens and great fun too, just a word of caution though, the AF is slower being a third party lens than your dedicated Canon, Nikon equivilants, but great at the price! Just learn to experiment with it and you'll love it!
Look at the flickr group for pictures. You'll get a much more comprehensive test pool to compare against.

But in short, buy it. Not sure why you'd buy it to replace the 17-70 though. I have both. In fact I bought the 17-70 after the 10-20 because I needed a little bit more range. Don't regret it at all.
Mine arrived today, can't wait to use it. Paid 299 on purely gadgets, lowest I could find it.

My favourite lens! The distortion can make some, um, amusing images, like when used for portraits

Now you have me a bit worried....
One of the reasons I'm going wider is to try & reduce some of the distortion my sigma 17-70 has at 17mm, I guess the 10-20 only shows much distortion at its widest too ?
thanks

I think you're gonna get some distortion on any lens of this super wide focal length. However, the distortion is pronounced on closer objects rather than when taking landscapes etc.
Have a look at this thread for loads of examples of good shots taken with this lens:

Thanks for the link Dave, some great shots there...looks like the distortion is more obvious between 10-12mm & then doesn't seem noticeable, still gives more a few extra mm on the W/A "distortion free" over my 17-70
