filters

sorry im new so if this has been asked before im sorry lol i just bought a skylight 1a filter and though i bought it just to protect my lens and on the off chance it actualy helps at all i was wondering, if i left it on my lens when shooting indoors or just normaly will it effect my photos? i heard it makes your images softer if so will i notice the effects??? please help lol
