View Full Version : The iPhone as a Photographer's Friend
Just got a lovely new iPhone 3G through work, and having never used one before have gotta say one word... WOW! As a mobile browser and email client this thing is just sex in a small rectangle!
I know a few on here have them and others were considering buying one recently (Betty/Dee) so I am just looking to pick people's brains really.
I've downloaded DoF Calc, but is there anything else I should be looking to get? Are there other less obvious ways in which the iPhone can be useful (can it be used for emergency image storage, empty cards onto it etc). Any hints and tips, comments, do's or dont's, please speak up :)
id be interested in hearing the responses to this
i am looking at getting one of these very soon aswell
A few apps I like (some related to photography):
- Exposure - quick and easy way of viewing your flickr pics
- Locly - to find out what is going on in my local area
- Showtimes - find out what is on at the local cinemas
- Simplify - connect wirelessly to my itunes at home
- Shazam - listens to a short clip of music and then can tell you what it is
- Sol free - because you can never have too much solitaire
I also:
- setup my flickr account email address as a contact so I can email pics from the phone (only inbuilt camera ones)
- turn off location services unless I need to use it for something
I havent found any way to put pics on it yet and I did see one app in the store that tracks your geo location but it only works if it you dont close it, so that means you can't do anything else with the phone.

Set up a folder on your PC to hold the files you want on your Iphone. In the latest version of Itunes you can select which folder you sync your image files from.....
Easy really.
Must get some cool apps on mine though..... And yes, as an email client, it rocks...

I couldn't live without twitterific, and Picoli on my iPhone.
I don't really use much else however, it's a fantastic business tool. I can access my email at all times, so can reply to important emails at any time. I also carry the last 2 weddings photos on the phone to show prospective clients at a moments notice.

If there are any apps that people feel are missing, my good friend is an iPhone developer looking for a new project ;)
icecavern - I have been using twinkle instead of twitterific, have you tried both?

I've been trying out Sprinkle and Sparkle as alternatives. Twaddle and Shazzam look good too. There's just so much potential in the iPhone
So much potential that I may actually get one, instead of making up fake iPhone app names...

If that was the 6000th then I wouldn't say it was wasted :D

Indeed! I get mine tomorrow :woot:
Ok, a few more bits I have installed:
- Palringo - good for multiple IM services
- Unicon - a universal converter app
- Bloomberg - much better than the inbuilt shares app
- Evernote - capturing notes and syncs with the web version
A few other tips that aren't obvious:
- the headset in the box has a little switch on the mic part that can accept/finish calls and also works as pause/stop and next song (with two clicks) when in Ipod mode
- to hard close an app without resetting the whole device, hold the home button down when its open for a few seconds until the screen goes black and then let go

I use Midomi instead of Shazzam. Similar, but also has voice recognition so you can say the name of the song / artist or even sing it (also allows you to type the names of the song etc)
Very flexible, and also give similar artists to the one that was tagged.

Simplifiy Media.
Allows access and listening to your home based Itunes Library whilst out an about.
Only just installed it, so not tried it in anger yet.
It's available on FREE download at the moment for the first 100k downloads.
Yep installed that and it works fine, I even got half a song working over edge, I think it is best if you have wifi.
Thanks for the tip on DoF Calc. I use the iphone version of DOFMaster but it's a web app, not a downloadable app.
The Virgin Radion app is cool. Also Vicinity which tells you what stuff is around where you are (restaurants, banks, pizza etc). There's a Tides app for those who like coastal shooting which also uses GPS or cell location to find the tides where you are. And for Smugmug users a little app called Smugshot that grabs pics taken with the built in camera and uploads them to your Smugmug site with location info.
There's a Tides app
That sounds VERY useful! Will look for that one tonite, thanks :)

Apps I have found useful are:
Zenbe Lists, facebook and garage buy (why won't they make a UK version of the eBay app?)

Haven't got any photography apps, but anyone living in London might like the TubeStatus app. Works very well.
And as if by magic Strobist covers the exact topic

I was hoping there might be an app that allows me to use the iPhone as an emergency HD. USB to the camera, dump pics off, then reformat the card. Would be very handy as an emergency, or a 'better screen' to view pics on quickly.
MikeZS - There's something for your mate to develop :)
Airme. So far its the only app that seems to upload to flickr with exif info. It retains the gps data and even adds in the weather report for where you where.
Erm, I may have made a purchase today :woot:
I shall report back with my findings :D:D
You've bought a pony haven't you ;)
Yes, and I shall call her SkyDancer :D:D
I got my iPhone the other week and its brilliant.
It means that you don't have to get stuck behind the pc all the time to check posts on here, check e-mails. and thats before we even get onto some of the cool applications on there.
Being able to link the iPhone upto the camera to view the pics would be brilliant. Is it possible though?
This makes the iphone even more tempting for me since reading this thread. Ahhh!:runaway:

I'd love to get it, but it's so damn expensive here.
But the only real thing that's putting me off is the small megapixel camera. A camera in the phone comes in so handy. My 3.2mpx k800i SE is just killer for this one thing.
Does anyone else have battery problems. Only had mine a couple of days, but it is eating battery charge! I need to do some tests and think the fact i was using automatic 'fetch' was doing some damage, but at this rate i'll be lucky to get the battery to last 24 hours!
Might be the fact it's new and I keep fiddling with it too.
68lbs, the battery can be a real pain. The best way to make it last is:
- set email to fetch at max every 30 mins, or only manually
- turn off 3g in settings
- turn off wifi
- turn off location services
With that I can get mine to last for 48 hours with general messing and email reading.

Thanks blazzar :)
Done 3 out of 4 of those now. Turn off 3G though? Do I not need that for mail + any web stuff?
Found another amazing thing with it today. Not photography related, but it reads xls workbook files sent in emails.
iPhone

Awesome bit of kit, love it.
i bought the white 16gb one last night
its so cool cant stop messing with it
68 - don't know what the 3g is like near you but mine drops in and out a lot and reverts back to 2g quite a lot. So for email the 2g is fine and if I want to go on the web (which for me is less frequent) I just flip it back on. You may also find that the GPS works better with the 3G off aswell.
Its taking a lot of getting used to :D
well im having loads of fun with mine
uploading music photos and findin loads applications
glad i got the 16gb now
can you get msn on it ??
Yep, you can use Palringo I think.
This site may help for better reviews of the apps:
http://www.appvee.com/
Another cool feature Which I might download is this http://dynolicious.com/index.html, its one for the petrol heads amoungst us.
Seems pretty cool for £7, when other products that can do that are far more expensive.
Blazzar - I've now turned off 3G too. Nightmare with the battery yesterday!
Fully charged phone overnight. Went out 9am over to MiL's for the day. On the way over, i try out 'Vicinity' to see if it's any good, but it cant get a location. Probably because we're on the M62?
So, never mind, phone back in pocket.
1.30pm "show my dad your phone". Ok, I say, and get it out of my pocket. Turn it on, and 'Flash Flash, you have less the 10% battery!". Phone then promptly dies on me when tried to collect emails
What!?
That's 4 and a half hours! And not even used. Fetch was turned off, as was wi-fi.
It's taking the pee! I will be return to CPW today to complain about faulty battery!
That doesn't sound good at all, perhaps vicinity was the last open app and it carried on using your GPS even though it couldnt find you. I suspect you may have a bad battery though as even still it should last more than 4.5 hours.
That's a possibility I'd thought of. Have charged up and will leave phone sat idly on desk today and see what the battery does.
I'm guessing if I take it back to CPW they are going to leave me phoneless for a period of time :(
Regarding Apps..... I'm having a real problem installing them to the phone. In iTunes, I double clicked on an app, and it installed (Brain Tuner). However I can't get it to do the same again.
Any ideas ?
Steve
You don't double click them to install them. You just plug your phone in and it syncs.

You do if you buy them off the App Store on the iPhone ;)
Thats not double clicking :p
sorted...
I've just got a copy of TubeStatus, which is handy for anybody in London...

Is that even legal?
ive notice the battery does go quite quick, but that can sort of be explained by constantly laying with it
will just have to remember to charge it each night

I find that even though the camera is only 2MP, its damn sharp and the colours are perfect on it. I've tried alot of camera phones and the iPhone probably produces the best quality images
Well, good news... charged phone Sun night, yesterday I turned off wi-fi, turned off 3G, turned off location thingy, received calls, received texts, collected over 50 emails, reconfigured pop accounts, and this morning I have what looks like more than 80% battery life still left.
Woohoo!
I think the battery problem has a lot to do with fiddling with it. Use the phone 'normally' and it seems ok. Will just have to remember to charge if planning on doing lots of browsing or location stuff.
Good news, I think every iPhone user goes through the same pain. There are quite a few emergency power devices (little battery packs) that are coming out at the moment so I may pick one of those up because I love using Simplify (streams your itunes over the air from your desktop to the phone) and that needs at least 3G on.
I had the Nearpics app last night, anyone know how to take a pic and add it to the datebase? Looks like an interesting app :)
Not used Nearpics. I use Vicinity for possibly a similar thing.
And another useful set of tips:

Has anyone else got their portfolio on their iPhone? The screen is great for showing off photos...
I don't have a professional portfolio... but I will have a small 'family' portfolio on shortly for showing to family members etc. Bit like keeping a pic of the kids in your wallet, but slightly more high-tech :)
I keep my Flickr favourites on my iphone for inspiration, like I am going to Paris over the weekend so have downloaded the Paris ones. If I want to show my pics to people I usually use Exposure app.

I use exposure too thanks to this thread, but find it a little slow.

Probably shouldn't use it during football then. Understandable that the ref gave you a card :p
