Weve had a couple of requests for the front end of the site to return, thats the area that shows the polls, whos online, random images, calender etc etc, we turned it off when we upgraded software as the old software was tied into the frontend and it was a PITA to install again, however now its easier, so im asking the question!

comments please!

I would like to see its return, also Im guessing you will need some kind of portal page as the site expands.

the front end was a portal, but it was difficult to use, we are looking at a few options to expand the site, we have the space and the content to do it, but we want to be different, no point ending up looking like Fredmiranda or PoTN.

OI! I'm quite happy with my front end as it is, thank you. Don't go messing....

Seriously, though. My prefered link to this and other forums is a 'new posts' link. So I can't see me ever using it.

I'm a new posts person too myself...

I voted that I'd like to see it back, even though I'll admit I didn't use the first one that often...

...my reason for thinking it'd be better there is
a/ As a portal as the site expands (I'd probably use it more then if it was easier to see an overview of what's going on in the different sections without having to search through everything)
b/ I think it is helpfull for new folks finding the site, allowing them to see examples of everything the site offers, and an easy way to get to where they want go on the site.

I'd like to see it back as I found the calendar really useful, and it was much easier to vote on polls (and knowing when there was a poll to vote on too). I never accessed the forums via the home page as I always used to come straight to the forums, have a look around, then go to the home page (I'm strange, what can I say?)

Not strange at all minimeeze, chuck :D Absolutely normal.
Another vote for the return of the portal (Sounds like a star trek movie)

Sitting on fence ... but never used it anyway as I come straight here from tab marker !

I never used it. Probably because I forgot it was there once I set up to go straight to the forums:shrug:

I used to come to the forum via the front page. It gave a reminder about competitions in progress and the latest poll etc. From there I'd go to 'new posts'

I now come to this forum straight to the main index and click 'new posts' without looking at anything first. I just noticed the poll for the previous fortnightly vote...now that it has ended. I would have voted if I'd realised it was there.

So I voted for the front page just as a 'whats on' reminder.

Another vote for the frontend back

As a side thought, what would you like to see on this front end?
We can pretty much pull anything from the forums to show...so new posts from certain forums...polls...memberlist...top posters....birthdays....forum stats....calendars...etc etc

Straining the old memory cells as to what i used to look at now :)

Checking how long I had left to put off entering a comp was one thing that was useful (and where to send it).

I never read the news bits.

Seeing the latest poll was good but it got annoying when it stayed there long after it was dead.

Some basic info for new visitors is an obvious one.

The galleries offered must be attractive to some people - a picture link?

A nice big 'see the new posts since your last visit' button - that works for members and takes non members to a sign up page?

As to stats and lists - no thanks :)

:agree: The only other things I thought about to add would be maybe a members site/gellery of the fortnight/month... news on site get togethers (eg. Donna Nook etc)... and possibly news on forums members accomplishments (e.g Janice's recent acceptance to The Guild of Essex Craftsmen) might be nice for forum spirit :)

We will definately be adding gallery stuff to the front of the site... ;) Can't say more than that at the moment....Matty will have my cojones in a vice :p

I suppose we could have a "Forum News" forum which we could parse to the front of the site....In that forum we could put forum announcements like Janice and the Guild, Get togethers, etc etc.
Or we could use an existing forum....

Good idea

Never did use it.

Me neither. I tend to use the New Posts tab and Mark All Forums Read tab when I've finished, which just keeps me looking at fresh posts. :)

Which is exactly what I do now- but I completely missed the poll for the fortnightly as it was not a new thread just an edit to an existing.

dont worry, front end returning soon.

we can use the existing news feed to work the site news threads, and gallery will be sorted out soon, random image and we could also integrate a members gallery of the day, when plan X is complete(slow and steady, dont want bad code making it all fall over..)

Good point, I think we should make all polls new.... :)
