View Full Version : Image Size update II
right ok, weve pulled hair, scratched, and kicked.
Image Rules
Images from the FREE gallery provided by Talkphotography must be
160kb and 800px on longest edge
Images hosted off site must be:
800px on the longest edge, No file size limit.we would like members to post reasonable images sizes, and use comman sense with regard to the amount posted per thread. If we feel the image size is too large we will break links. A warning such as '56k warning' must be posted in the thread title.
We're far too soft with 'em. :D
You're all very nice men....
really nice men :D
i think we should start banning people...whos first
I'll go first Pink Momma, you big Barbie Doll.
thanks Bachs....*plots*
for offsite
Making it 800px max is actually forcing smaller file size. 800 doesnt have an unlimited file size.
surely making a file size maximum and letting people post the size in px they want is better???
my 2p anyway :D
i know no one listens to the noobs anyway

We listen to everybody, we just can't please everybody ;) 800 pixels was arrived at yonks ago after we polled people to see what res they run their desktops at. The overwhelming majority was 1024X768, so 800 pixels gives a good filesize without having to scroll around an image to see it, and without thread formatting being all over the place.
I hate scrolling around images anyway, I want to see the image in it's entirity and 800 pixels is plenty for an image properly processed and compressed. I value my image quality as much as the next guy but I wont be doing anything substantially different to what I do now.
We don't want to be getting onto people about image sizes all the time, or at all for that matter, so we're hoping this new leeway will make it easier for everyone, and that they'll use it with common sense and discretion. :)

800px is a good size for the forums layout, over that and you start having to scroll right to view the image, thats why we do it. Ive seen images over 500kb at 800px...is that not big enough??
we listen to everyone :D
blimey, CT typed quicker than me...
And I'd have said the same :)
Large pixel sizes also make the image more attractive to someone looking to steal it as they have enough detail for a large print.

And given some of the stunning shots we get posted here, anyone who thinks there aren't those out there unscrupulous enough to just nick them is living in Cloud Cuckoo Land. ;)

ahhh now i get it, they all should be 800x600 250k max
i thought url'd images :bonk:
brummie, off site images 800px max, file size sensible..if its on the forums gallery then it wants to be 160kb max!

Well what we're saying (I think :D) is that 800 pixels is the max longest side, so it could be 800X800. 250K is what we're saying is our preferred image size, particulary if you're posting numerous images in one thread, although we're not imposing any max kb size at all, leaving it to people's discretion.
If the image is hosted off site, i.e. not shown directly in the thread - just linked -then you don't have any restrictions at all - pixels or kb's - at least people have a choice of whether they click on the link or not. :)
taken and digested
