Noob question re: Sigma 10-20 [Archive]

Had a little spare cash at the end of the month so grabbed a Sigma 10-20 for my 400D. Had a play around with it - wow!, so much space to fill. Anyway, probably a very dumb question but what are the markings/scales on the body of the lens for? Not the 10-20 scale but further toward the front of the lens? Probably very obvious but :shrug:

Obviously, as I don't know what they are for, chances are pretty much 100% that I'm not using the lens properly so some help would be much appreciated. :thumbs:

If you mean the markings in the small window, they are the focus distance in meters and ft (0.24n to infinity).
