As you know I've just got the Canon EOS 350D

If I wanted to get an external flash would I be right in thinking I can only get a speedlite EX or is there a list somewhere of flashes that might / would work so I can go fleabay hunting.

Thanks

Allan

Well the Speedlite Ex's are recommended due to their complete integration with Canons E-TTL metering.

You can get other flashes though...and if you're looking at the cheaper end (like me :D) ie fleabay then they will have varying degrees of integration with the camera.

If you're looking towards older flashes, then you need to check the trigger voltage Canon's EOS system, is reported to not like anything above 6v....

This site lists loads of flashes and user submitted trigger voltages :)

I am currently using a Cobra 700AF (Canon EOS dedicated) with my 300D. It works quite well.

namllihs...How are you getting along with them?

I was considering getting a Cobra700AF from ebay as theyre quite cheap.
I just want the ability to bounce the flash.

How much manual control do you have to...er...'do'...

Take a look at the Sigma EF 500 DG Super which has nearly the same power as the Canon 580EX but is a lot cheaper. :) I'd avoid the ST version which lacks some useful features like decent manual control.

If you'd like something smaller and neater, the Canon 430EX is very good IMO.

Remember that most of the improved features of ETTL-II are functions of the camera, not the flash unit. There are a couple of features peculiar to the Canon 580EX and 430EX, but I'm not sure they make much difference.

Obviously its not as good as an EX model, but I find it works well enough for my level of photography.
I mainly shoot in manual or AV however it gives good results in Full Auto mode.

Likewise, got mine from onestop for £127 and couldn't be happier with it.

Obviously I'd love a 580ex but since it's double the price at least....

Typical, mine just died, switch it on and it just tries to zoom out, even switching it off doesn't stop it, need to take the batteries out :( Ah well, where's the screwdrivers :naughty:
