580EX II - AF assist beam issues

Is it normal for the AF assist beam to only work in the preset Auto settings?

I was in a very dark room and I had no assist in M but then by switch it to the auto modes the AF assist beam works.

Just find it odd that I can't get it to work in M, Av, Tv etc

I have checked C Fn 8 and it's set to enabled...

Any ideas welcome...

You have to enable it in the camera custom functions as well, I think.

I don't have my camera at hand but I remember it's something like, only external flash emits, enable, or disable.

The speedlite should then emit the assist whenever it's needed.

Did you have AF in servo mode? The beam will only come on in single shot mode.

Yeah it's in servo mode lol.

I'll have to remember that one then for next time
