View Full Version : Is this art?
This light cluster on the stairs of the art gallery in Blackpool was better than most of the contemporary art on display. But is it art? For more info go to http://photoreflect.blogspot.com

As someone who made custom lighting to architects and designers sketches for a large part of my working life...yes they are art of a kind. Feature lights are often used as a sculptural focal point for an area and any lighting performance is almost not considered at all.
One time we covered loads of large clear plastic dish shaped diffusers with blobs and smears of green lacquer - applied with a torn up sponge. looked a right mess but the architect loved it and they were the main feature of one unlucky shopping mall.
Another one I still find incredible was bits of broken crockery (cups plates teapots etc.) glued on the ends of stainless steel rods and poked through a 'lampshade' also of stainless steel. All about 3m across and a one off for someones kitchen!
So lighting as art - yes (sort of) :)
edit: I'll try and find some pictures of daft lights and scan them when I get a chance.
Well I like the light fitting. :D Nice blog btw.
I don't dismiss all contemporary art but some of it does leave you wondering who's kidding who.
Walsall council has a track record of unveiling some horrendous pieces of sculpture in public places, but they've actually done something right for once and erected a huge statue of a coal miner in Brownhills on a major junction. The statue acknowledges the areas long mining history, stands 30 feet tall, and despite the sculptor's contemporary approach, the vast majority of the public seem to approve.

I really must get over there and take some shots before the townie pigeons have worked their full magic on it.
