This is what this lens is made for. Taken at f/1.8

For a change I had my Speedlight EX580 for this shot.

My daughter Joanne taken this lunchtime..:)

Great shot! She's very pretty - you must be proud!

She could have sorted her hair though! :p

Does she know you have posted her on here?

Good portraits Tim. Not sure why you shot at a shutter 1/60 when you had flash and f/1.8. Fill flash i'm guessing but then she's not against light, haven't shot in aperture or shutter priority for a long time, cant see why it gave you a shutter of 1/60 when you had flash.

All the same well exposed pal. Second shot's the best for me, i prefer environmental portraits to standard head and shoulder shots (though i do take them)

It's not too difficult taking sharp images with the gear you have Tim. Portraits are hard, doing someone justice can be tough going. But you have not done a bad job here

First shot, shadows on her face, not sure if it's the flash or side lighting, but the flash hasn't eliminated it, shadows can add a great deal to a portrait but they can also take a little away. There's some sort of green hue at the side of her head but can be easily sorted out.

Second shot, tough lighting. Hard to expose your daughter and sky together, stoping it down for the sky and using fill flash would have helped. Diagonal line running out of her head is distracting. Closer to the foliage would have made for a better background

What i love about prime lenses is how much they shine in available light, i'd like to see you shoot some available light shots, your daughter makes for a very natural looking subject which is whats best about the shots you've shared. Sharp images don't mean anything if they don't mean anything. But she looks at ease, and dad or not that's not as easy as it sounds

Cheers

Sean
