Its a very good lens. But on a 1.6 crop it maybe lacking in the wide side of things, but thats down to personal preference.

I have to say that I LOVE my 55-250mm. It hardly comes off the camera. While you can not get the wide angle, I find that is outweighted by the zoom and clarity of the lens at maximum ends of the length.

I would not be without it now. To me it is just so versatile, it's fab and I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Depends what sort of shots you take my canon 24-85 is on my 350D 50% of the time but then I don't do masses of wide angle or telephoto shots

still a cracking bit of glass, and 38- 170 is still a brilliant range

Without a doubt it is. I've had one for around half a year and its my main go-to lens on a 5D.

I agree, I love that lens. Very sharp right through the zoom range, and great colours and contrast. I have a 17-40 as well but if I had to choose one of them to keep it'd be the 24-105 every time.

The EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 would be my preferred general use lens for a Canon cropped sensor body (http://www.digitalrelish.net/132/the-best-walkabout-lens-for-canon-eos-dslr/).

I like the width. ;)

does it have to be fixed aperture.
the sigma 17-70mm is my walkabout and ok its not that long but thats what a bag is for to carry another lens! Match it with the canon 70-300mm and its a great combo.
