View Full Version : Catergory threads
as above, say People thread, Flower/Plant thread, Abstract, Motion, Landscape etc.. just a few, no need to bombard the forums with threads/sections.
this is something that weve been umming and arring over before, the trouble with this is although Sharing is the busiest section of the forums we could end up with a few quiet subforums , with nothing more than a few posts a day in, which isnt good. Nothing worse than seeing the same 2 or 3 names posting in a forum to make it look busy!
HOWEVER!
What do you all think of this? Is this something that you would like to see at sometime? Do you think we are busy enough or should we wait till we have MORE members posting?

how about:- 'landscape', 'flora/fauna', 'portraits' and 'all-the-other-stuff'
Boon do you mean threads or forums?
ermm, sections i think, say, if you want to post photos on street photography, goto street section and post, or similar with landscapes, and the same for birds, narrow down or limit the amount of 'sub sections' you will have.
I dont think many people will go for this,as the sharing forum is where everyone posts whatever, and they will probably want it to stay this way.
On other forums i sometimes visit, there are quite a few sections, and if one is interested in the subject, you visit, if not, you dont.
leave it with you..

good idea marianne:thumbs:

I think it is probably a good suggestion but ... concious of the need to minimize the subbies a Marianne type list is probably sensible ...
Flowers
Birds, Bees & Animals
People
Macro/Micro ... (second bit for KenCo ...)
Miscellaneous ... (or that wot don't go nowhere else ...;) )
second bit for KenCo ...)
Thanks Ven:thinking: :suspect:
I visit one other site (and NO it isn't) and have to say I find it very difficult keeping up with all the different sections and miss a lot of posts because of this. I'm not into every type of photography but do like to read all post when I can just in case I try something similiar....but hate having to click my way round the different sections. I'm happy to go with the flow and if different sections are needed I think the fewer the better and would suggest.
Nature........(birds, insects, flowers and landscape)
People (& stuff inc Action and sport)......(People, street and stuff)
Misc.....(everything else)
I think Minimeezing (see what I did there Cheryl) the sections would be better than having loads.
we shall discuss this further, as Ken says, loads of categories is not a good idea, look around at some other forums and you can see that although it looks good with lots of categories, its not cool when there are hardly any posts in them, that is the main worry, if you dilute the forum content it becomes less busy looking, and with that comes a drop off in postings, you have to have a good few new posts a day to benefit from it

You're most welcome Ken ... :naughty: ;)
But you don't have to do this if you just click on 'New Posts' do you ... as it brings up everything from all categories ... or have I got it wrong ...
Wouldn't be the first time ... & doubt it will be the last ... :p
i dont like using the new posts feature, i like to browse round threads. If i come online after a day out(like yesterday)and find i have 200+ new posts, i wont go through them in a list!
I've never used most of the features on this site (still learning all this forum stuff).....just reading up on the "add to ignore list" though Ven! :p

I have been thinking about this to when i use the forum. Point being is that like any art it's subjective, i'm not really a wild life shooter i don't have much interest in it, so often if a reply to such a shot it's just to be friendly which is no real help to the poster.
Totally agree that there should not be too many. People, wildlife, still life and landscapes could cover a multitude of sins
Just my 2p
ok we will have a chat about this and see what it looks like on the test board!
how about a trial period matty, say a month, and if they aren't used enough in that time, as it was eh!
How about...
Mini's categories :
People
Flora / Fauna (but named something different, cos that sounds a bit posh :D)
Landscapes
Animals
Have those as subforums in the sharing section, and if it doesnt fit into there, then it goes into the main sharing forum rather than any of those subforums.
As for it being subjective, if it can go into more than one subforum, then its up to the poster to decide where it goes, we'll be laid back about it (unless it's a shot of a dog in the people forum :p)
(unless it's a shot of a dog in the people forum :p)
So what about all of us who believe in reincarnation?
Edit: and that's not a request for a sub forum!
How about.....
People
Plant/Animals
Landscapes
Macro/Micro

err Fauna means Animals don't it ? :)
It is very difficult to choose 3 themes to cover all aspects of photography.
This is the best I could come up using just three themes:
Nature
Covers all fauna, flora and landscapes.
People and Photo Journalism.
Covers portrait, street, travel, urban landscapes etc.....
Specialist.
Covers Sports, Macro, Transport, Architecture, etc.....
Keep your ideas coming, it will help us decide when and how to do it.
No what I mean, is....
Don't try and cover ALL aspects of photography with minimal subforums...
Just the most popular ones...
So we still have a sharing forum for everything as we do now...just that landscapes will have their own subforum, as will people, animals, and flowery stuff :p Everything else will still be in the sharing forum as it is now.
I dont really mind which way it goes as although I often whinge about the initial changes, I soon get used to them.
I think as the site gets bigger the above changes will probably be inevitable anyway but, in the meantime I do rather like things as they are.
As the site is, Im often enticed to look at a thread with a picture that would normally hold no interest to for me, like the boys toys pics for instance. Ive seen some stunning action/motor shots here that I wouldnt normally look at if they were in a section of their own.
Just my take on it.

I couldn't agree more with this comment. If you break it up into sub-forums then people only go to the certain ones that interest them, missing out on alot of good photos in the other forums. The forums are great and everyone get's alot of feedback and interaction with each other just as they are now. If it' snot broke, dont' fix it IMO.
