One of the first shots taken with my new 30D. Not sure what's wrong with it really. I think the colours/focus/dof are good, but it's just not doing much for me. I've tried different crops, but none of them work.

Any advice?

I think its really lovely...maybe needs a bit more space at the top but apart from that I love the colours and detail :)

It's nice though. I feel it needs more space over the top of the red flower?

I agree , if you increase the canvas by 20% with green along the top the picture seems to 'balance' better .

Fudged you a bit of space over the top Kate and just a smidgeon on the left side. :)

Technically a pretty good pic Kate ...

However, it maybe has lost some of its vibrancy 'cos the flower seems past its sell by ... and the petals are starting to wither ...

Doesn't make it a bad picture though ... 'cos it ain't ... ;)

CT - that looks so much better!! Thank you :) Everyone was right. All it needed was a little more space at the top & side.

Venomater - Thanks for your comments. The flower wasn't actually past its best. It's just how it looks. If anything, it was a bit before its best :) They're quite messy looking flowers anyway. That's why I like them :)

I love messy flowers too Kate, are these Echinacea? Daisies are my favourite, marguerites, gerberas, gazaneas anything like that... :)

Marianne is swearing at us all again in a foreign language.:p

CT's version does make the composition look better.

How do you add the space above it like that??

Well you can increase the canvas size and then clone the background into the space. What I did though, was increased the canvas size, then drew a rectangular mask across the complete width of the pic, starting just above the flower head and level with the existing top of the pic. I then promoted the mask to a layer and simply stretched it upwards to gain some background, flattened the layers, and cropped the image to the new size.

I can't help but feel that the shot has been taken from too low an angle. Whilst technically very very good a little bit of petal emerging over the "dome" would give better balance to the picture IMHO.

I say this because I DO NOT know what kind of flower it is therefore have no idea how it should look .
