ok, so i went to the Doc's today with a big toenail problem, whilst i was there she decided to weigh me as she said ' you look like you are carrying a bit too much weight', and she was damn right too.:( :'(
So i thought i have heard a lot of members in here mention they are ' large' also, :naughty: and thought what if we all tried to loose weight together and post some nice idea's for things to eat, instead of nibbling chocolate biscuits.
Anyone up for it, we could post our weight now, and again in a fortnight or month..
so anyone up for it..

Why not just loose the big toenail?
If it's big it must weigh a lot :D

Seriously though a good idea

I've been blessed with a slight build all my life so I won't be joining in or I would have to run around in the shower to get wet.

I am very pleased with myself however as I was a fairly heavy 'in-house' wine drinker and fairly heavy smoker (around 30 a day)

In my quest to save for my 1dMKIIN I gave up the booze and fags at the same time about 2 weeks ago and all is going well.

Feel fit as a butchers dog already and I'm sure anyone losing the weight will feel better for it too.

Go for it!

its looking good for the challenge, my weight is 14stone (88kgapprox) but i am only 5'8' tall, there lays the problem, instead of having to go to the chiropodist, i should go to the dentist and have my sweet tooth removed, that is my downfall. We will give it a couple of days, see who else want to join in, then we will start on a given day and take it from there.

Marcel
12-07-2006, 10:01
Well I'm 6'4" and I'm nto sure what I weigh at the moment. A couple of months ago it was 17 something...Now I daren't weigh myself because I'm afraid it's gonna be more..lol

Back in 2004 I was working for the BBC and was about 17 1/2 stone...steady weight...(Job on the road, ate out alot). Anyway, I ended up leaving there due to depression, and ended up ballooning to 22 stone. As luck would have it, in August, something inside me said "**** me, look at the state of you", and I started slimming....

As of last April I got down to 16 and a bit stone, but then lost interest. Ended up quitting the gym, and became less fussy about eating healthily.

Now, as I say I reckon I'm about 19 stone ish...so I need to kickstart myself into touch again.

I did write out a little story I did last year, talking about my weight problems I had...I'll see if I can dig it out.

SammyC
12-07-2006, 10:22
That's a real problem mate, getting bored with the exercise. I am absolutely certain that dieting alone will not lose weight permanently, as soon as you start eating normally again the weight comes back.

But the same happens with exercise, as soon as you stop the weight comes back. Which is why I think running, swimming, cycling is the best form of losing weight as its nowhere near as dull as a gym. If you can find an exercise that you enjoy it stops being exercise and becomes fun.

I've started cycling to work every day, much more fun than queuing in the car, and it gets you fit. Even in the rain its good fun!

( don't think you can use that one Marcel! :D )

:)

Marcel

Hehe

I've always been a firm believer in the Law of Thermodynamics :D

When people say "I hardly ever eat, and I exercise loads but it just won't shift", I find it hard to believe.

The rules are simple. Eat more calories than you burn, and you'll get fat...eat less and you'll lose weight...simple.

So how do we lose weight? Well we either eat less calories, or we burn more calories.

Doing it excessively is just silly, because as has been said, when you stop and revert back to normal, you'll just put the weight back on....we're back to thermodynamics again :D

What is needed is a lifestyle change, a PERMANENT one.
Now it sounds daunting but it isn't really.

If you tackle it a bit at a time, it really does become easy.
For example.
Switch from butter to low fat spread.
Dont fry: Instead bake, or use a griddle pan.
Or spread a little bit less on your toast.

Drop from 2 sugars in your tea to 1 and a half...then a few weeks later, to 1..then to half, then to none...Trust me it works. I used to drink tea with full fat milk and 2 sugars....and *hated* it otherwise, now I drink it with semi skimmed and no sugar.

It all takes time, after all you didnt put your weight on overnight, so don't expect to lose it overnight.

Also, another golden rule / misconception, is that you cannot spot reduce fat.
If you want to lose a bit of weight from your tum, bum, thigh or whatever, then just aim to lose weight.
You don't get to chose where that weight comes off...Your body genetics does.

You'll notice that men are predispositioned to putting weight on on their tummy first, ladies on their bums.
Well when you lose weight, it comes off in the reverse order it went on...so with men, chances are your tummy got bigger first...then your hips, then your thighs and bums....Well when you lose weight, your bum and thighs lose some first, then your hips, THEN your tummy....

If that makes sense. The only thing you can do is weighted exercise to tone up the area you are interested in :)

Well I belong to a gym and I actually enjoy it very much so! It's almost addicting now and if I don't go I feel like crap. I have kids though so I do bike ride, go swimming, and so on. I'm very active but still manage to put on a few extra pounds the older I get it would seem. I'm 31 years old now and I just can't eat the way I used too, lol. No more ordering pizza at 1:00am. One of my worst habits, lol

Sammy's right too, the minute you stop exercising, the weight comes back very quickly. It's a lifestyle change so find stuff you enjoy doing boys or it just doesnt' seem to work!

In June I lost 1/2 stone in 2 weeks down at Goreskh in Afghanistan. The heat and the vast amount of water you drink (about 16 litres a day) means the fat just melts off you.
It's even hotter there now, so I'm looking to lose about a stone with any luck. I'm pretty thin everywhere apart from the love-handles and a slight belly - it's the only place I put any weight on and it's all beer, I'm afraid. A month in a 'dry' camp should sort that.

Ive always been a perky size 8 but now a size 12 is looking a bit on the tight side and I really dont like it.

Some of my girlfriend's laugh when I complain Ive put weight on but I know I can rely on my old mam to tell it like it is. Last visit as I walked up the stairs in front of her she uttered the crucifying words every woman hates 'Our Glo, youre getting a right ar*e on you'. Thanx mam!

I think I just need more exercise to be honest, been a bit lazy of late.

Its not only calories in vs calories out it can vary with metabolism, so some people who don't eat a lot and can't shift weight could have a slow metabolism but this can be increased by eating proper meals daily or lots of small/snack meals (4 or 5 in a day) but still healthy food instead of 2 or 3 big meals.

Yeah yeah rub it in I'm a measly 165cm / 5'5" and tip the scales at 85 kg / 187.4 lbs / 13 stone 5 lbs so not what you'd call tall or thin :(

My wieght loss program started in november when I was 100kg or so.

I don't really believe in strict dieting for me its all about "portion control" you fancy some chocolate have some chocolate but have one bit not the whole damn bar :nono: it hard but thats life. Alot of the old sayings are true don't go shopping hungry, try to eat a big breakfast and a small dinner etc.

Exercise wise to loose the flab cardio vascular is the way to go so running/walking, swimming, walking up and down the stairs pretty much anything that gets you outa breath. However if you a gym member don't neglect using the weight machines as your metabolic rate is affected by your "lean muscle mass" the more you have the more calories you'll use up each day.

My current "program" consists of a 3 mile jog a random selection of the wieght machines and 10 mins of trying to use a skipping rope ( not a word about it being girly or I'll send the two boxers who gave me the rope round :boxer: )

ok I've been typing this for way too long so I'll finish with a couple of tips

1) drink loads of water as if you don't drink much your body thinks theres a drought so slows everything down to conserve it and stores it just in case.

2) If you want to start running I'd check out the couch to 5k program over at www.coolrunning.com (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml)

Booze is my weakness. I have a method which has worked for me to maintain a balance. It's a bit sad but, what the hell, I'll share it with you.

I give myself a point for everyday I exercise and don't drink.
I take a point away for every day I drink and don't exercise.
I try keep my score close to zero (-2 to +2 maybe lower at the end of a holiday!)

I have gone from drinking almost every day and exercising a couple of times per week to exercising and drinking 4ish days a week.

Seems to work and it's not too hard to keep up.

i am very similar to Mini, its the cakes, biscuits etc that let me down, i have started today, with only half of my lunch, and although i am not going to starve, i intend to eat properly.

Well yesterday I was a hand model for my friend in Oxford and all I got fed all day was a saladbox!
I was so close to yelling 'Im a hand model not a bloody catwalk model... feeeeeed meeee!!!!' but I behaved myself, and felt so proud at the end of the day.
Then came the 3 hours of sweltering traffic jams to get home, so by the time I got there, the first stop was the fridge. 2 ice cold juices, 1 custard tart, 1 southern fried chicken, a jam tart and a cup of tea later and I felt human again.
This slimathon thing is going to be very hard going, Im really struggling to cut out the crap! :(

I usually avoid threads like this as I am somewhat of a heavyweight...

but.. I need some motivation from somewhere to do something about my health so I may just join in with you guys.

My starting weight is likely to be higher than most of yours (if not all) at approx 280lbs (it's been a while since i weighed myself) and the docs tell me that I should be around 168-182 lbs for my height however I think I would end up like a male version of twiggy if I went that low because I am naturally heavily built - so I am aiming at 196lb as my ultimate target weight.

So.. I have 6 stone to lose

I drink so rarely that you could almost call me tea-total so I have no problems there. I don't smoke either so my only bad habits are food and lack of excercise/laziness... oh and a tendency to drink a lot of fizzy drinks - some days between 2 and 4 litres per day.

This last week I have tried to drink only water (and still drink upwards of 2 litres per day) and I have tried to avoid snacks so it's a start - but that's it.

I have lost 44lbs once before with weight watchers so I know I can lose weight, what I lack is will power... and the staying power to keep up with it once I have lost the weight.

Anyway, I don't know what the point of my rambling was except to say that I will be watching this thread more closely from now on

Excellent start Braeden!

Can I suggest that you get on those scales to give you a true starting point. You'll never know if its is working until you have that accurate start weight.

What plans have you for exercise? I hate that word 'exercise' it has so many negative feelings for many people, how about 'What plans do you have for getting sweaty?!' :D

I take it you have a 9-5 job? How far do you live from work?

InaGlo
20-07-2006, 10:25
Do we have any kind of group plan in place with this, or are we all following our own individual thing?
I used to walk 6 miles a day on average, dance the weekend away in clubs and play Badminton every couple of days... that was just a couple of years ago but, now I get out of puff strolling to the local shop ..so I dont .:nono:
If Im honest my only work-out now is gardening.
I really need to find some motivation . Being let loose around my local shopping centre with someone elses plastic would probably do it but, lets face it, thats so not going to happen!
So guys, how are you motivating yourselves to exercise, sorry... 'getting sweaty' ...especially in this heat?

SammyC
20-07-2006, 11:10
Well I cycle to work every day, 5 miles each way and lots of hills. My motivation is that it's too expensive to drive these days :(

Saying that, when I drove the other day I felt like I was cheating and got grumpy because I couldn't wizz past the traffic queues so I guess I'm enjoying it.

It takes me about 20 minutes each way and I feel a lot fitter than when I started.

Another hidden weight contestant here, but to say I'm big as you can see from my pic, I'm 6 ft 4 and normal household scales wont give my weight. :(

But I will go into town to a machine and get weighed and follow along quietly.

When I stopped being a pro hockey player I was laid up for 6 months of not walking - (broke my ankle in 6 places) and the weight just piled up and the muscle died away. But want to loose some now.

I think I need to drink loads more (esp water) - I can go all day on 1 bottle of water, and a cup of tea.

Got a step board 2nd hand - just dont know how to use it - anyone know of any sites with some ideas for using it

I'm going to join in with you guys.

In the past 7 years since I started work I have put on 3 stone. :'(

It is mostly noticeable on my stomach...it is now terrible and this morning my husband tried to shock me into addressing the situation by saying how awful it looks!

I must stop biscuits and sweets. (a bit hard when I have to buy them and have them in the cupboard for the rest of the family....my boys are like beanpoles!)

At my age I am having permanent hot flushes and I cant contemplate excercise....but I will try to cut out the sweet things along with a gentle dog-walk in the evenings and see if it makes a start.

I couldnt see any point in trying....nothing on the horizon to make me want to bother....but now all you great bunch on here are trying too, I will give it a go and try to do it along with you. Thanks.

Janice, well if you're doing it, then I will too. I have gotten to the point with my weight loss now, that it's almost "Pfft I dont care", but I know thats an excuse for me having no enthusiasm, because I really DO want to lose it.

So with that in mind, we'll egg each other on so to speak (only not with eggs, because there's up to 10 grams of fat in an egg :D)

I'll go weigh myself now, which I've been putting off.

Ok, I weighed myself this morning and it seems i'm already lighter than I expected to be (even my mother asked me yesterday if I had lost weight) since my last weigh in was almost a stone heavier than I am now.

273.5lb (19st 7.5lbs or 124.3 kilos) is my starting weight for this slimathon.

I don't have a time limit as such, but my target weight is 196lbs (89 kilos) so I have a mammoth task ahead.

I can't afford to join a gym yet, but when the house has sold and we have got somewhere else to live then I will do so.

As for my plan, well I lost 44lbs on a weight watchers diet some time ago so until the house sells I will mainly be watching what I eat, as well as walking to places I would normally drive to (within reason) and generally trying not to be such a couch potato. Hopefully this will improve my photography as well since I will be taking more walks

So im in for this :D

I have an excel spreadsheet for anyone that wants it...
Basically you enter the date, and your current weight, and it works out how much youve lost (or gained), not only since the last weigh in, but also cumulatively, and converts it into straight pounds, and also kilos for you  All done with my fair hand :D

I've uploaded the spreadsheet to www.marcelbooth.co.uk/m/weightloss.xls

There are a couple of entries in there (to show you how it's entered), you may delete those

Basically enter todays (or yesterdays) date, the start weight.
Then on the next line, the new date, and your new weight, and it works everything out for you.

It also works for negatives, so what I like to do, is when I've put ON weight, I highlight the whole line and change the text colour to red to give me a reminder ;)

By the way, it only accepts weight in stones and pounds, and converts to the rest for you :)

Regards

I'm 6ft tall and last time I checked was back up to around 23stones, I did get it down to just under 21 at some point this year but I've had problems with work and things and I tend to eat a lot when I'm bored.

I'm not going to take up exercising at the gym again - I last for so many months and then get bored and stop going and the vicious circle begins. I already drink only sugar free drinks, dont really drink alcohol, its the biscuits, crisps, junk food that does me in.

With photography becoming a serious hobby for me, we're doing much more walking around at the weekends and that should hopefully make a difference. We'll see what happens and see what my initial weight is in the morning :)

what did they have you doing Marcel?

Marcel
15-08-2006, 09:18
They didn't do anything. I basically worked my own stuff out.

Started off warming up a bit, then onto the weights machines.

Roughly 3 sets of 14-16 on each machine with about 30-40 seconds rest inbetween each set. Weights on each machine were one so the last set on each machine was a bit of a struggle (not much of one, mind :D).

Then onto the cross trainer. 2 mins warm up, 30 seconds going hell for leather, 90 seconds comfortable pace.
So at 2 mins 4 mins 6mins and 8mins, i'd go hell for leather for 30 seconds, really get it pumping. Then active recovery (ie recovery but still moving) for 1:30.

Then onto the treadmill for 10 mins, put it into a bit of a climb (only set at 3.5 whatever that means in real money), and a speed of about 6k, nipping it up to 9.5k (jog speed) for about a minute.

Cool down, stretch off, and a lovely shower, followed by turning the shower up full and cranking the temp down to freezin...love it, tis a good refresher if you can handle it (although it really does take your breath away).

SammyC

Roughly 3 sets of 14-16 on each machine with about 30-40 seconds rest inbetween each set.

Depending on what you want of course but if you're looking to lose weight then sets of 20+ would be better. Anything around the 12-14 mark will bulk muscle rather than burn fat/tone, i.e. make you heavier.

Obviously, like I said, depends on what you want to do. :)

Am I too late to join? Every year before my holiday I think about doing something to shift the beer gut and thinking about it is as far as I get. My mrs wants me to get waxed but I keep telling her where to go becuase I think that the hair on my chest does for my belly and boy boobs what camoflage does for hiding soldiers. It's always there it's just not so easy to make out. Anyways perhaps now I'll do something about it. I'm 5ft11 (oh for that extra inch, I so want to be 6ft) and 16st 4lb. I've no idea what I should wiegh (and I never trust those doctors charts) but I want to lose the gut, the boobs and the flabby neck/chin bit.

Seeing as I'm new and have no dignity to lose would you like me to be the first picture?

 heh, heh. the fact that you joined back up with the gym is great!

You guys are all doing great, first few weeks are the hardest yes. I would stay away from the weights though until you get down to the weight you want, then bulk up from there Marcel. I barely touch the weights when I go to the gym. Now I know I'm a girl and I'm sure it's different but still, lol I do 20 min on the treadmilll, 50 min on the cross trainer and then ride a bike for a half hour. just to jump back a page regarding the whole using weights means bulking up not losing weight. The Current scientific view point is the more lean muscle mass you have the higher you metabolism needs to be to keep you going and so the more calories you burn just by being alive which is y bodybuilders etc need to eat loads to maintain their physique. I'm not saying we should all look like arnie in the terminator but a little extra muscle here and there will help the fat go away. You may not get lighter but what r u more worried about what the scale says or if your belly's flatter?

Another point of contention is the you can only loose wieght by doing long bouts of cardio there are some studies the sugest that whats known as High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) ie the run for 90 sec walk for 60 sec or some variation thereof is more benifical than a long slow jog because it carries on working after you finish training personally I find it more interesting as well which means I'm more likely to do it :)

Thats exactly my understanding as taught to me by my personal trainer...
The HIIT is what I'm doing too, although I do find it hard sometimes.

It does mean that I can get the cardio stuff done and over with, rather than boriingly slog on for hours on end

oh and the other thing alot of people misunderstand is "low fat" foods aren't the solution to dieting. As "Low Fat" dosen't mean low calories, if some exagerated hypothetical food has 1g fat but 2000 calories eating it isn't going to help you if your goal lose weight. As your body is more than capable of turning calories into fat all on its own.

Like wise eating not enough will hinder results as well. Initially starving yourself will shed the pounds but as minimeeze mentioned your body will enter starvation mode meaning it'll slow the metabolism down so you'll use less energy through out the day. If you're feeling run down and slugish you may not be eating enough and your body is trying to save energy by slowing everything down, it not clever enough to know that another meal is coming. do a rough guess of your calorie intake per day if its less than 1200/1500, its too low as a rough guide it obviously changes person to person. This is why lots of people loose wieght then pile it on and them some afterwards the body is slow to come out of starvation mode so when people go from eating virtually nothing to eating normally its still conserving energy so can store the excess the food provides on your hips bum and tum.

The body does similar things with water don't drink enough and it'll put a hose pipe ban on ya no non vital uses of H2O. It's going to take a fair few decades of having an abudance of food for our genetics to forget the bad days of famine in the western world.

All the above coments are as I understand things I've no qualifications in nutrition of the mechanics of the human digestive system. If you know I'm wrong about something put me right please :)

Edit I've forgotten twice now to say Braeden is doing great keep it up mate

Thank you

I don't know whether I have said what I have been doing but just in case here it is:

1) I have cut out fizzy drinks altogether.

Previously I would drink between 2 and 4 litres of Dr Pepper/Coke/Fanta or whatever the machine supplied when I got there. I now drink water (bottled and chilled of course) in place of the "pop" I was drinking before, so not only do I cut the sugar/calorie intake - I save money as well!

2) I have severely cut down on snacks - but not altogether as I don't think I could ever do that.

Previously I would have approx 2 packs of crisps a day or one may be substituted by a chocolate bar of some description from the snack machine at work. Now I take fruit to work as often as possible although I do still have crisps occasionally with my lunch but I avoid the high fat/calorie crisps (the ones I really like :'() and go for things like walkers french fries or similar. At home I mainly have a savoury tooth as opposed to sweet but again my main problem was snacking - a sandwich here and there and the like. Now I eat my lunch and evening meal and if I am still hungry I will have either fruit or cereal where possible on a night. I still don't make time for breakfast though which I know I should.

3) reduced portion sizes

Previously I would have overly large portions, for example if I had pie chips and peas, I would have 2 pies - now I would have one (if I had actually had any pies since then which I haven't). I used to get hungry all the time when I first started, but now I find it is far less frequent than before and it's actually getting easier to eat less.

and lastly

4) I have changed departments at work

Initially this was a temporary change but it could well be permanent. My contracted job is at a desk all day with very little physical activity and usually lots of coffee and or coke etc, and above all it was boring - I tend to snack when I am bored.

Now I am working in the high value component store which involves being stood up for around 6 hours per day but also involves quite a lot of lifting and carrying which has increased my excercise a hundredfold.

All of the above has contributed to my weight loss, and now quite a few people both at work and amongst my friends are commenting that they can tell that I have lost weight which is a huge boost to my confidence.

Sorry for the huge post - I didn't intend for anything like the size it has turned out to be.

Marcel
22-08-2006, 01:18
Braeden  on not only your success, but also on such a good post :)

You sound just like me.

I was 22 stone in August 2004, due to a bout of depression (comfort eating, not going out etc etc). I was always big, but ballooned the extra 5 stone.
Anyway, I did pretty much everything that you described there. Made small changes, which when all added up made a HUGE difference.

I got down to 16st 7, however, I'm now back up to 18 7 and my old eating habits have returned (giving in to things, having a HUGE appetite, and snacking all the time, plus eating late etc etc).

Slowly but surely I am working on it, and posts like yours are an inspiration  So waffle on with huge posts :)

Gemok, you've hit the nail on the head there. I think everything you said, I've also been taught in the past.
The key to sustained weight loss, is slow and steady. You didn't put it on overnight, so don't expect to lose it overnight.

The starvation thing is so true too, the body, for all its clever stuff, can actually be quite thick sometimes .
The first thing I did when I started losing weight a couple of years ago, was have something to eat in the morning....When you wake up your body hasn't had any food for over 10 hours, so eating something, even if its just a piece of fruit, kickstarts your metabolism...You're then burning calories efficiently until lunch......whereas if you didnt eat any breakfast, then you would be storing calories and putting weight on until lunchtime....bit of a no brainer when you think about it really :D

Both of you, thanks for the posts

Janice
22-08-2006, 08:33
Yes, thank you everyone....some very interesting stuff there.
My weight gain was from depression also. Its a vicious circle, you put on weight because you're depressed, then because you're fat you dont go out but pig-out on snacks and watch TV......and get even fatter!

It was the initial habit-change that was difficult, from eating 2 bags of crisps and loads of kitkats of an evening....to an apple!
But the body is a creature of habit....and after about a week I had no urges to eat crisps or chocolate or cakes at all.

I have a bowl of Special K & red berries for breakfast, a crab-paste and cucumber sandwich with no butter for lunch and a normal dinner at night, but smaller than before. (when I say normal....not a fry up or anything..... just meat and veg.) In the evening I may have another bowl of Special K or maybe an apple.

My clothes feel miles better already....although I have another 1.5 stone to lose.

My husband bought a new set of scales at the weekend. They show us as being half a stone heavier than the old ones!!!

But like you said,. the actual weight doesnt matter, but how much you have actually LOST. and how better you look and feel.

I feel much brighter and happier now too,,, I think the junk food makes you dull and bored.

Good Luck everyone...keep persevering.....I am....so you can too! :) :) :)

Some interesting reading here people!

On a slightly different note.....

I have an 18yr old pseudo step-daughter who's currently piling on the pounds. I know she is storing up trouble for the future but am at a complete loss as to what to do help.

Being teenager and compounded by the fact that I'm not her dad, I feel that anything I say will fall on deaf ears or worse, result in the usual 'I'm doing the opposite to what you say' reaction. We don't eat together as a family as she is mostly at her b/f's house and I don't live with her mother full-time yet.

Any suggestions parents/dieters?

Marcel
22-08-2006, 12:29
Hmm it's a tough one.

Are you close to her at all? In that do you have the right kind of relationship where you would be able to sit her down and say "Listen, I love you no matter what, but I'm really concerned with your health. It's not about you being fat or what you look like. I'm worried you're heading for really bad health problems later on in life, and you're young enough to do something about it now before its too late.

Maybe suggest a healthy eating plan? Get rid of all the crap around the house, so she can't snack on anything. Make it the norm around the house that fruit is the only available snack, and all meals that she *does* have at your house, are healthy ones. (OK, her house, but you see what I mean).
When you say piling on the pounds, how bad? Is she just getting a bit chubby, or is she REALLY eating alot?

It could also be that she's depressed or unhappy for whatever reason, and that she's comfort eating. Like I say, if you have the right sort of relationship to enable you to, then sit down with her and have a heart to heart. Reassure her that you and her mum love her and you are simply concerned about her welfare. If it's approached with care, rather than control in mind, then she will most likely react positively.

If you find you get nowhere, pop on over to www.raisingkids.co.uk I'm a moderator over there and there are literally 1000's of parents over there, alot with kids the same age who have tackled exactly the same problem.

(My eldest is 7 so I'm only going of what I would do :))

As has been said before, weight control is a balance of food in and effort out.

So, is she getting enough exercise? If you're serious about becoming part of her life (by becoming part of her mum's life) then how about a shared activity? This has the advantage of helping you two bond as well as increasing her fitness.

Also, maybe also help you increase yours? Maybe that's how to suggest it, as in, I'm thinking of doing some exercise cos' I'm unfit, how about you come along and give me some encouragement to make sure I don't slack off? A good one for this is you run whilst she cycles.

Gandhi,

I would be incredibly careful what you say. If I know anything about teenage girls (I had two sisters and a stepfather) she will not thank you for the advice, and it could create a huge amount on tension.

I would concentrate on making her happy, comfortable and confident in herself. Pay her lots of compliments and don't suggest there is anything wrong with how she looks. If anything speak to her mother and see if she wants to talk to her.

I hope you don't mind me throwing in my two penneth...

Cheers for the feedback guys.

I'm not that close to her alas. As she's been brought up entirely by her mum until I came on the scene 2 years or so ago, she's as fiercely independant as her mum so tends to take most things with a pinch of salt unless it comes from her ma.

I had a bit of a chat with kell about it this afternoon, and she agrees that something needs to be done, so kell is gonna try and steer her in the right direction, this may involve limiting the amount of time she spends with her boyfriend as it's only since she's been seeing him the problem has arisen. His mother and two sisters also fall into the 'obese' category alas. That will be the final straw though as it's just gonna create conflict. For the moment it's gonna be hugs and support and lead by example.

Bugger.

Hey guys. As I'm new here I just found this. Well I used to be in the US Army and while never skinny I was fit. But after my son I have just poured on the pounds and now am considered "obese". I've started with Paul McKenna and I also have my own hypnotist. I've been changing my habits slowly and at week 3 I've gone down one size. I don't weight myself as at my weight that is just discouraging but I think the support ofsomething like this could only help! So hopefully you will be happy to have me along.

Cheers
Renee

Paul McKenna. I went through his book and audio CD and found it great.

The only problem I had was sticking to it...but when I was 'doing' it, it was good, it actually worked in reducing portion sizes etc

I tried Paul McKenna....but when he tried to stop you craving something you love (like chocolate) it didnt work....cos I couldnt decide what to use, as I love everything!!! :D

Ive lost 17lb in total since we started this.

Ive had 3 people notice Ive lost weight.
My jeans are baggy, 2 holes tighter on my belt, my tshirts fit better...

Its certainly a wonderful feeling...and I feel 100% better in myself (which is also probably from eating better foods and less junk). (might be able to come off the Prozac soon  )

SO glad I started doing this. And for our founder....how ya doin, Boon? ;)

That's fantastic for you three (two girls and Braeden).

Have you all got any tips, how you've been coping? What you've been doing? Any meal ideas? etc

I made a post here (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=115527&postcount=212) detailing what i have been doing.

As for how I have been coping, well last week was hard because I was not at work all week so the temptation was there to eat more hence my slow weight loss. I must admit I am struggling at the moment due to various stresses I am trying to deal with all at once, but I won't stop now that I have come this far.

You sound just like me. The problem areas you highlighted are where I've been falling over too. Snacking on the wrong foods, eating late at night, and more importantly, portion control.

So what weight are you now? By my reckoning you should be at a similar point to me. If you are, we could use each other as motivation :)

I'm 18st 5 as of yesterday.

Can I offer a word of warning to people on here, be very aware of what effect the shorter days will have on your motivation.

I find it's easy to find the time/inclination to go our for a walk etc when the evenings are nice and light, however as the evenings start to draw in my motivation to get up off the sofa and DO something also retreats!

I think being aware of this effect is half the battle. :)

 @ Braeden.

Then I think I'll use you as my motivation if you don't mind mate :D

Sammy, I'm the opposite. I'm a night owl by nature, so I expect my motivation to increase.
I love going out for walks when its dark......

Marcel, I've been following the Slimming World plan as I find it sensible - I can eat loads and not feel hungry, and I can still have stuff like chips & chocolate :D and go out for meals without feeling restricted.
Being female, there are certain times when I really struggle as all I want is stodge and chocolate ;) My diet has certainly changed for the better and I'm eating very healthily, with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, and trips to the gym when I can manage to fit it all in a day!

Ah, I'm a morning person. I don't want to be but I tend to wake up at about 7:30 each day and have to get up as I'm usually wide awake within about 15 minutes. :(

Missus can sleep for Wales, the bugger! :D

My missus can sleep for England! (Or Wales, or any other country for that matter). I really do envy her, because she can go to bed at whatever time she pleased, and within minutes of shutting her eyes, she's away with the fairies.

Me? I need to be almost comatose and falling asleep on my feet before I get into bed, otherwise I just cant get to sleep.

Even though I'm a night owl, and I love it. I really do wish I was a morning person. I can get up for sunrises and planned events should I need to though.
One of my ex bosses, she was an early bird. She used to get into work at about 5am bright and breezy and get loads done. Id love to be able to do that.
I love the early morning, when no one else is around, the sun's coming up...fresh pot of coffee or mug of tea is on, birds are singing, I've just had a shower, and I'm getting loads of things done before anyone wakes up....One of my really great feelings :D

However, due to me being a night owl, I don't get to bed until late (I'm one of those who finds it really hard to get an early night :( Wish I could ***)...which means if I get up early, I'm falling asleep come 9am. lol

I picked up on this thread late, lol! I'd been dieting seriously the first half of this year and lost 5 stone. I've taking a well earned break and am just starting back on it again. Only another 2 stone to go....
