hi all, the time has come to add some kit to my photography gear so i'm looking at a new lens and flash gun/ext flash. Ok i use a canon 400D and have the standard kit lens 18-55 and a sigma 70-300 telephoto macro lens. I want to replace the standard lens but not sure what lens to go for, it will mainly be for photographing reptiles and doing portraits and would also be interested in it having a macro feature, the question is what lens would u recommend i go for? i dont want to spend a fortune but i know u have to pay for quality i guess between £200-£300
thanks guys
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is a really good value lens, I used to have it. Costs roughly £200.
Heard the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS is good too :)

sigma 17-70 is nice and sharp but not too sharp for portraits and is great at macro

Another  for the Siggy 17-70mm from me. Replaced my Sony kit lens with it and very pleased with the results....
