View Full Version : Kit List in Profile?

It can be very useful when asking a question (or doing some research) to know what members have camera equipment-wise
Over at Nikonians you can fill in (or not if you prefer) details of what camera kit you have and the people there seem to use it quite a bit when answering questions (?) Some of the answers are on "pick lists" to keep some uniformity (?)
Here's a bit of what you see when you view my profile @ Nikonians

I know you can list your kit on your signature but I've never really been keen on that "I've got more kit than you" malarkey ...
The only problem I could forsee would be at the rate some people change their kit (me included :nono:) it might be a struggle to keep it updated ...
Just a thought  ... Paul

I think those profiles over 'there' really just add to the whole "my kit' malarky you had mentioned. It shouldn't be about that at all. Just my opinion of course.

Especially if yours is like mine!:tumbleweed:

Jewel is right, it shouldn't be all about the kit, per se.
But it might still be a handy feature to have, (only if it is used of course).

What does everyone else think? Would you use something like this?
It would most likely be in the form of extra fields in your profile.

I dont know how much use it would be, I prefer to see what people have in their signatures, its handy to see the pictures they create with the kit that they have - knowing that they have the same kit as me allows me to feel I can aspire to taking pictures as good as the ones they take. If they have kit in there I don't then I know what I need to put on the shopping list to get the shots ;)

How about we have one field, under your post count, with your main camera on it?
Everything else can either stay in your profile, or in your signature.

Do people think *that* would be beneficial? Harmful? Too much towards the willy waving scenario?

Could work, I guess the biggest factor is that it means more work for yourselves.

I have noticed that if you ask someone what they used for a shot they are normally more than happy to provide details.

The problem I can see is that you would be assuming that shots are taken with equipment in their profile, which could be flawed when people dont manage to keep their inventory profile up to date.

(Just my 2p)

I was thinking the other day about a poll whereby we could at least show which brand(s) we use. It should be one of those polls where you can see who voted what. This would allow two things: (1) you could see which other members used simialr equipment to you and (2) we could get an idea of the demographic split between canon/nikon etc. It could even be stickied.

I dont know if this would really work, but maybe it's worth some consideration?

I'm sure I actually did that a while ago.

Lemme dig the thread out, see what we did there, and maybe we can set another up, or restart that one

We did have that at my request, might be an idea to have it sticky.

I like the info in the sig for exactly the reason darksaber made.

For those who want to post the information, I quite like the kit list as it appears in the signature now...

Not a bad idea, then I could see who has what lens and lives near me then go round and intimidate them into loaning it me. :)
