Firstly what is the main purpose of the lens hood and where can I find one for my Sony kit lens?

Ebay doesnt seem to be of any help

lens hoods protect the lens from knocks and such, reduce lens flare.

no idea where to get them from, do sony do them or are you after other makes?

Possibly look on eBay for one that screws into the filter thread?

The lens hood comes with the kit lens. It is usually inverted on the lens and needs to be unscrewed and turned around.

It helps the ego too, if you're anything like me and believe that size does matter :p!

Is there not a wider plastic ring around the end of the lens?

Yes in fact you are right it has one of these http://www.sony.co.uk/product/ddl-lens-accessories/alc-sh0006

but I was thinking more of those petal type hoods

I though the same when I got mine a couple of years ago. TBH I don't think you can get a petal hood for this lens, at least not a Sony one anyway. You could try searching around on ebay.

stops flare
protects front element from knocks
makes people think you've got a bigger lens than you actually have.

You may not need a petal hood at all! The petal shape is to serve a reason, and that's to avoid vignetting based on the type of lens and its angle of view. If your lens dosn't need a petal shaped hood then why would you want to get one as such? A normal hood would do it fine.

The best way to find out, is to check in your lens's manual and see what hood is recommended for it, and then get a 3rd party hood that fits.

If you still want the petal shaped, I think Marumi do such hoods.

Reading up and looking on sony site etc I dont think I will need one for this lens but might get one when I get a new lens and put the kit one to rest.

You should find that any lens you buy will come with a hood of a type suitable for that lens.

It's unlikely any of those will fit the Sony lens.

I think these are all screw-on hoods. So, even though they're stated for a specific brand, they would fit any brand .. unless the thread size isn't the right one!

Fair point, you're quite right. Thought they were the usual bayonet type. :bonk:

Yup, initially I thought so too, but at closer look I realised they're just a screw-on type.

When you screw on a petal hood, how do you know it will be orientated correctly when fully done up???

was jsut thinking that unless its like a quarter screw turn or something so that its easy to re-align.

Looking at them, they use the filter thread, so hopefully they are lined up so that they end up fully aligned.

The ones I've linked to have a "clamp" that needs to be tightened before you're ready to go. The hood mounts with the tread, like a filter, then you align the hood in the right side-up sort of way. Once that's done you "clamp" it in position ready for your shoot. Not a bad work-around

Probably easier than taking all your hoods with you, especially for me as both my lenses can't be manually focussed with the hood inverted as it covers the focus ring. I'm going to give the printable ones, cut them out and apply a bit of couble sided tapewith the backing on and leave them in my bag til I need them!
