My bike is looking a bit sorry for itself at the moment, someone broke into the locked bike store outside my flat and stole my pace forks off it :( Is a Marin Pine Mountain though, quite old (bit like me lol) was bought in 1993, and until i can save the cash up i wont be riding it anywhere ! but did the London to Brighton on it twice ! along with loads of offroad stuff with my brother ! :)

here's a tech question for you's lot, to cut a long story short I'm looking to change from an 8 speed cassette to a 9 speed jobbie.

To do this I know I'll need new shifters and cassette and chain and I already have a 9 speed compatible front mech. What I want to know is if my 8 speed front chainset and rear mech will work with the new shifters and thinner chain?

This might be a question for Noah as he's an ex-bike mechanic IIRC.

in theory it should work but in practice I bet the chain skips. the 8 speed chain is wider than the 9 speed and although you can index the derailleur to work as a 9 speed my worry would be the width of the teeth on the jockey/guide wheels and their compatibility to the 9 speed chain...
in short you might have to get yourself a 9 speed complete setup.

I know exactly where that is and thought exactly the same thing when I was bombing through it
yep, just above the ridge. do you get out there much? I'm probably heading out again this eve (go out most eveings this time of year)

SammyC
10-08-2006, 14:55
Not a vast amount if I'm honest. My bike has it's road boots on during the week and I can't usually be bothered to swap them out and back again just for a quick blast. Plus the fact that I've just cycled home! :D

I must admit to being 50-50 on the chain thingie, reading around suggests the difference in 7/8/9 speed chains are the side plate widths with the inner gap being constant. I'm not convinced but who knows.

Most of the cycling I do is commuting to work. Bikes are nothing special I'm afraid first is an old Peugeot 21 speed hardtail mountain bike. This fell apart on me right in the middle of a busy cross roads with cars coming at me from left right and behind. Forks stem had sheared and all came apart just as I rode out to cross the road. Luckily I got away unscathed but bike is resigned to the back of the shed as its that old it's proved difficult to source a new set of forks for it. My mate at work sold me a Raleigh full suspension bike for £40 and I've been using that instead.
The bike gets used on rough ground and roads on the way to work, I like taking short cuts and don't like long drawn out hills because I always seem to be riding up them into a head wind. Cross country at night with no street lights can be quite entertaining, night vision goggles would probably help.

what have you gone for?

my tracer has been faultless on it's Hope discs

SammyC
14-08-2006, 19:40
Ive gone for Shimano Deore LX set, I looked at getting hopes but to get a decent set of mini's would have cost too much. Also the Shimanos have a very good reputation for not squealing, which is nice!

Kit is:
2006 LX hydraulic disc brakes & rotors
Same caliper as XT but 2 piece (XT is 1 piece)
Wheels - new 585 LX splined disc hubs handbuilt into Mavic XC717 rims
LX levers
LX 9 speed shifters
LX 9 speed cassette and chain

Bike's currently 8 speed, so the new cassette and shifters will make it 9 speed. :)

New front fork is next, was thinking about a Marzocchi Comp Air for about £140 but currently storing a makes bike which has a very nice Rock Shok Revelation fork. Adjustable extension and compression makes them very attractive but twice the price :(

digitalfailure
14-08-2006, 20:13
I have mini's on mine, hope Ti hubs with mavix x317 disc rims held together with Dt swiss spokes

my front forks are getting on abit now, they are Manitou Mars elite with the hollow MRD crown,

SammyC
14-08-2006, 20:33
Hope seem to do good stuff although on the expensive side of things. I might look at hope for BBs and cranks when mine goes (which isn't long off I suspect!).

digitalfailure
14-08-2006, 20:35
I went with XT for the chain set and front mech, much cheaper to replace ;)

SammyC
14-08-2006, 20:38
The only thing that stops me doing something like that is the non-standard Hollowtech BB that Shimano now use, obviously ties you into Shimano.

digitalfailure
14-08-2006, 20:43
you try getting a hope or other exotic BB or chainset when miles from a city.

I managed to bend the big ring on my last bike while on a weekend away at coed y brenin, nipped to a local small bike shop and they had a replacement on the shelf  had it have been a fancy pron chainset i'd have been up chocolate creek for the rest of the week end.

slicks

Brakes look yummy

SammyC
20-08-2006, 21:34
Yep, slicks for commute to work. Moohasive difference over knobblies on the road.

It's been a bit of a trial getting them fitted. Basically it's been a case of, if I can get it worng I will do. Best so far has been pads on wrong way round (braking surfact on the outside). D'oh!

Brakes need a proper bleeding now, Shimano propose a very poor method of pumping the brakes until the air bubbles rise to the top. Get my dad to give me a hand and bleed them car style.

:)

digitalfailure
20-08-2006, 21:39
i prefer to pressure bleed them tbh.

but it depends on how shimano have done the fil ports on your levers.

Just be sure not to spill the fluid on the paint work. If you do get it on there, plenty of cold water will wash it off.

I used to have a spare set of rims with slicks on, i had a small off which destroyed a front though, so now I just stick to 1 set of tyres for all.

shiato storm
20-08-2006, 23:49
bleeding brakes - yeruch!! Hope do an easy thing for that which I'm sure could work on the shimano's - unscrew bottom bolt, attach a tube connected to a bottle, at the top you open the reservoir and pour brake fluid in. if you got it right, when you drain the old stuff you add the new at the same time, bubbles are forced out and robert is your mother's brother...

what slicks are those? ever tried some hutchinson gold slicks? I had a pair and they're savage, 1" thin, pretty grippy and light as anything = flippin' fast.

edit: is that a trek bike too? guessing by the pain job just visible...

SammyC
21-08-2006, 07:26
Well the Shimano procedure is to open the bottom, pump the brakes till oil appears, lock it off, pump the brakes a bit more, repeat until feels firm. Wait a bit for bubbles to rise and then repeat. Madness.

What's most eannoying is their requirement of a 7mm spanner. Eh? Why?
To bleed them properly will take two people, one person on the lever and one person on the bleed nipple. Got them fairly solid at the moment so I'll try that until my dad comes down at the weekend to give me a hand. :)

tyres are Continental Contact Sports, 1.3 inch:

http://www.calhouncycle.com/productcart/pc/catalog/cont_sport_20_2309_detail.jpg

I took over 400 shots at The Scottish Mountain Bike Downhill Championships yesterday but I can't get to any of them at the mo as my hard disk battery is flat.

This shot is taken by Dougie Todd of my boy on his Giant Team Downhill bike. Brakes are Hope (4 pot front/6 pot rear). Mojo suspension has had several tweaks by it's previous owner (current Scottish #1) which it makes it rather plush. Greg has it set to fast but should see him well into next season.

http://static.flickr.com/89/220316124_5753749e3c_m.jpg

I myself run a Specialized Rockhopper disc and can say that it will not produce any sexy shots because it is scratched, bashed and abused as a mountain bike should be. The Highlands have some fantastic trails BTW.

I still have my 1980's Trek and it runs as good as gold. The dayglo paint job is a bit  though.

SammyC
23-08-2006, 07:41
Ok, upgrade is complete!

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/gallery/data/613/IMG_6999_800x533.jpg

First impressions are, arse they don't work initially! Take a bit of bedding in, but after a few faster than I'd like decents through the trees the back brake is now working nicely to the tune of one finger lock ups :D.
Front brake will be worn in during the commute. :)

I like them!

shiato storm
23-08-2006, 10:05
yum yum orange!
I've got to clean my brakes, general grime getting to them causing them to be slightly soft - they were stupidly sharp new - its not that there's air in the system, just pads not gripping as well on the disc itself.

SammyC
23-08-2006, 10:09
I've still got a fair amount of air in mine, very soft on the levers. But to bleed them properly is a two man job so I'm going to get the old man to help me at the weekend. :)

digitalfailure
23-08-2006, 17:44

digitalfailure
23-08-2006, 20:39
Ah, they've riveted them to an adaptor plate.
Is that going to be a standard others will adopt, or are you stuck with having to use shimano hubs?

SammyC
23-08-2006, 20:53
I fully suspect the latter. It's only a rotor and hub issue, so just new rotors if I change the hubs.

digitalfailure
23-08-2006, 20:59
I've just been looking at the shimano site

the XTR discs look cool.

Not sure i'd change my old skool mini's for them though.

SammyC
23-08-2006, 21:08
XTR stuff is very beautiful but silly prices. LX rulz dude!!!!

digitalfailure
23-08-2006, 21:18
XTR is dependable in the toughest situations,

being able to shift when the back mech is completely covered in drying mud is worth the extra cash, not to mention the fact that it'll last a wee bit longer than the lower levels.

Xtr for the bits that need to work, Xt for the bits that you'll break and for all the bits in between........we have Easton :D

SammyC
24-08-2006, 07:43
Easton? Wassat?

I know I had some Tourney bits and still have a Avilo rear mech.

I think next on the list of upgrades it has to be forks. My £45 RST Gila T5 (wooo) forks are not liking the extra torque those discs are generating :D.

digitalfailure
24-08-2006, 21:41

shiato storm
26-08-2006, 00:34
knew a guy who was intense's best customer in the UK, he had 5 of them...
DH racer of some sort if I recall rightly, have to have a screw loose to do that, tons of respect to them, still nuts.
XTR stuff is nice but not always worth it, rear mech, cassette and cranks perhaps (XT are notoriously soft on the middle ring - otherwise not bad). I only run an lx front mech, not point going higher its one of the least used parts of a bike, i guess my lx shifters could do with an upgrade one day to fit everything else but again I've indexed them so tightly it'd be a faff to change and it'd take ages to sort out. also have some fox forx that I'm thinking of ditching and getting some rockshox rebas or marzocchis...foxes - despite the hype- aren't that great. mine went back for servicing 4 times in half as many months! only original part on them are the outer legs! have lots of mates who had foxes but sold them on - too high maintainance, whats the point of spending more time cleaning than actual riding??
I just want a bike thats light and works, faffing around with faulty bits gets m' goat. haven't gone down the ful sus route because of that I guess, might be tempted though if it becomes feasable...like the look of marin attack trails or specialized stumpy fsr (mine's an HT stumpy, fast as fe*k!)...
oops, I've rambled - apologies!

SammyC
26-08-2006, 08:05
No appologies required, always interested in ramblings on a subject I'm just getting into!

I think I'm gonna ride my bike through the winter as is, let the muck take it out on my cheap rear mech and forks and then replace them with something better.

I was thinking of getting the ever popular Marzocchi MX Comps but I've recently been tempted by some RS Revelations. Twice the price but offer a lot more adjustment. I like the idea of adjustable travel.

people on other forums used to know me as stumpy because of my jaunts out on specialzed's finest.....not to mention hitting a tree stump while hoofing down a decent while mounted on afore mentioned metal matrix stead ;)

I had a pair of zocci's once, low pressure air jobs with 100mm of bounce reduction, i didn't rate them that well tbh, but they were better than the SIDs i had on the other bike at the time.

part of me yearns for a set of Pace RC's, but the manitou's just won't wear out.

Sammy, adjustable travel is a fad, you'll set them once and leave it alone. Decent control of compression and rebound is all you need no matter what terrain your riding.

HowardB
27-08-2006, 12:44
If I'm climbing, I always drop the travel to lower the front and then open it up at the top. I can adjust between 90 and 130mm in 3mm steps with my fork - Fox Talas RLC.

I tend to lock the fork as soon as I'm on tarmac, otherwise its left open. Ive never played with rebound and compression though, just have them set mid way.

I've got rebound control on the rear shock, but i havent touched that either. Think its set mid-way.

I'm thinking about changing some of the bits and bobs on my bike now because of this thread and my renewed interest.

Been looking at some nice carbon bits
adding pace forks and bars should reduce front end weight a little further giving a little bit more flickability and a new carbon seat post to finish it off.

It's almost as expensive as photography isn't it! :D

I love putting expensive featherlight bits on my bike. It means I can eat more pies

it'd be nice to afford the pies after spending on bike pr0n.

Hey DF, got any recommendations for some baggy shorts? Just split (again) my Endura Humvees so looking for ones that DON'T split!

I wear Double Happys from www.groundeffect.co.nz Have to buy direct from them which is the only downside, great shorts though.

The only baggy shorts I have are made by Pace, they've lasted well tbh. All other shorts are of the lycra type

SammyC

I have the lycra inners but I refuse to wear just them because it's not fair to inflict that on the world. Anyway, I've been past too many times on the way to work by lycra cladded racers who think it is required to go to standup pedal mode just as they pass me into view. PUT YOUR @RSE DOWN I DON'T WANT TO SEE IT!!!!!

I might have to sort out something quickly as they are falling apart rapidly!

whilst I agree that men waving their booty around isn't my cup of tea, I am familiar with the practice of standing up and stomping on pedals.

I've been heckled a few times doing it too :)

If i'm riding through a busy place though, I do try and wear something a little looser :D

Woo hoo!

Popped over to Afan forest for the aftoon today. Me and the missus got the week off so are trying to do stuff! :D

Wow, tres bean Rodders!!!! Only managed to do the Wall but it was way top bombing! :D

Thought I'd struggle with it but there was only one place that I had to dismount. Well pleased.

BTW, what's the deal with all the tight hairpins, struggled with them a bit.

digitalfailure

Afan is a good ride

I find the best way to get round the really tight hairpins is to get in a decent gear before the turn and pedal it.
Sticking your foot out and drifting the corner looks impressive, but it's usually a slower turn.

thankfully the principles have not changed; pedal = go faster, squeeze brakes = slow down. unless you've lost brake oil...

My Gary Fisher Promethius got nicked last year :shake:, so I'm down to one ATB (Litespeed Ocoee with XTR and Middleburn bits, Judy SL's etc) and two road bikes - Joe Waugh 753 Gold Medal with full Dura-Ace and a Scott ally-framed winter bike with a mixture of 105 and other assorted bits.

I'll post some pix later, maybe...

she's rolling at last after i found some hose for the rear brake. not that it works, i've decided i hate hope, easy to bleed, easy to service, don't work. i want some avids or saints.

this weekend shall be fun, taking out the medium spring in the forks for a hard one instead so i need less air preload and changing the oil - if my 7.5wt arrives on friday. and the fun of swapping the 750 rear spring for a 550 so i can actually bottom it as it's a little hard at the min. the endless battle to make those hope discs stop me shall continue and i'll re-tension the wheel i built before xmas as it's looking in need of a tweak. it's been a long while since i enjoyed a full day of fettling with my bike, can't wait.

just a couple of biking pics to remind us of the summer:

forgot to say some nice bikes in this thread. loving the old pace forks and p7, and the rigid klien and DF that intense is lovely. i nearly bought a tazer but decided the sx suited me a bit better as i could ride it normally too (with a bit of effort of course). that sc blur looks like a cracker too, i nearly went for a small one in candy red but thought i'd break it.

very excited about riding lately, just about to book a trip to the alps for the summer, anyone been?

Whats all this suspension nonsense? :D

Here's my custom build street/skatepark bmx, its based on a Macniel Whitton frame, all the other parts are a bit mis match i just bought the lightest i could afford.

http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/4697/centralfx6.th.jpg (http://img147.imageshack.us/my.php?image=centralfx6.jpg)

Quality is bad but it was taken on a mates phone.

For riding offroad ive got a Spezialized Vegas, cost the owner £400 new and he got bored of it, i bought it off him for £40 so got an uber bargain. Not mine but its a pic of one.

Getting a wethepeople beyond in a few weeks time to replace my Macniel.

You're right. I can't.

Whats that 3 feet? I can do 4 times that indoors :D mates of mine who are fit and healthy can fly 15-18 from a 8 foot quarter. Thats a hardtail though, loads easier than a full susser, gunna be buying a cheap hardtail myself soon for the summer season, thinking of a Kona Hoss if i can afford it.

aye, i've got a commencal absolute bmx, lovely thing but getting back into off road after the last few years of jumping.

i gotta agree tho bmx jumping and tricks are so far ahead of mountain bikes it's silly. i look distinctly ordinary at the skatepark or on trails riding the bmx, but if i take my mtb and go to trails mtbers ride i suddenly look much better jumping than 90% of them. don't get me wrong i'm not poor on the bmx, it's just the average level is so much higher.

this of course is all rubbish tho when you watch the pro mtb huckers doing 40ft drops and 50ft gaps of course.

tbh i just like anything with 2 wheels, give me an xc bike and i'll ride all day happily on good singletrack, a dh rig and i'll go as fast as i can and jump off what i see, and give me a bmx and i'll head to the trails or skatepark, it's all fun :D

Some nice bikes on here guys - married with kids now so can only afford one hobby now - Photography and only just!

When I was young free and single I used to have a Pollished Alloy GT Zaska with Manitou forks, full XTR Group set with Specialized rims - she was lovely! and I also had a Competition Cannondale Super V - used to do downhill comps at Keilder 1992-94... Those were the days! Used to buy my bits and peices from Peter Dark Cycles, Sunderland and BikeTreks, Ambleside - one of the guys there used to work for Orange - he was a Team Orange test pilot - what a rider!!! Ever see the brochure with the guy riding down a shale mountain side? That was him... Crazy :)
