D80 or S5 pro?

Basically my choice is one of the above.

I have three Nikon lens so really wanted to stay with them.

I know the Fuji is Nikon mount

So has anyone any thoughts as too which one i should spend my hard earned on...

For build quality and image quality I would think the S5 was streets ahead.

The D80 would handle higher ISO better I would think and be slightly fast frame rate. But I think you would be better off with the S5.

Depends what you will be shooting or your overall requirements.

Really want a D300 but cant justify the money fancied having a go at motorsport a mate has a Tiger race car that he races.
Is the AF in the fuji better than the Nikon for this sort of work ???

Some people will claim the S5 is to slow for motorsport. That doesn't appear to have stopped plenty of racing posts on Flickr from the S5 Pro.

Not too sure but it is slower in writing files if you have the increased DR engaged. Have you thought about the trusty D200 that might suit you down to the ground.

Again its not as new as the D80 and does not handle noise as well but it is still a great camera. Would suit your needs I would think.

Nope, the D80 is the same as the D200. I'd estimate the S5 Pro is about 2/3rd of a stop better than the D200.

The D90 and D300 are a bit better than the S5 Pro, but the S5 Pro is better than any other DX Nikon camera (with the possible exception of the D40)

Its a 6 megapixel camera, with an extra 6 megapixels dedicated to dynamic range improvement. These "R" pixels do not contribute towards vertical or horizontal resolution.

You sure PD... I always found my D80 much better at the Higher Iso's than my D200.

The D200 will underexpose in low light. The D80 tends to over-expose. Over-exposer helps s/n ratio. I often wondered if this was deliberate :)

Equalize exposure, WB and shoot RAW and its the same more or less (the D80 is better in JPEG for sure)

Neither the D200 or the D80 (which is essentially just a plastic-bodied consumer version of the D200) are great at much above 800 iso. The D80 and so I would assume the D200, is pretty awful at long exposures too..

If it's between a D80 and a D200, I'd take a D200 for the better build quality. The Fuji isn't really a general purpose camera the way the Nikons are. I only use mine for portrait/still life work, for motorsport the D300 comes out...

The price is coming down almost daily on stuff like the D300, I noticed up at the top of the page that the price difference between a grey import and a UK one with 2 years warranty was just over a tenner.....

Remember clear-r-gear (Jessops) have been known to list refurb D300s with a 12 month guarantee on Ebay for £640 delivered....

It's more work, certainly, but just do what the Nikons do manually. Cover the lens up (with the cap, for example) and take another exposure, then overlay in Photoshop and subtract.

I've been doing 5-20 minute exposures with my D200 set at ISO100 fine. I wouldn't say this is an issue really (I can also provide full sized samples if you want). As a D200 user I'm quite tempted by the S5 Pro for the dynamic range but I really like how rugged my D200 is and don't have any reason to change to any other DX body. FX is another storry.....sigh.

I'd buy the S5 pro because at the current refurb price of £350 you could try it out, if you didn't like it you'd easily clear £350 for it on ebay so think of it as a free extended trial :)

Liveview on the S5 Pro isn't very functional. You can't scroll around the view at all, just look straight down the lens.

It's subjective, extra MPs don't necessarily make for a better camera, plus a new S5 with warranty costs the same as a secondhand D200, and refurbished S5 can be had for £50 less than the D200.....
