Canon 100-400 L Telephoto Zoom

I've purchased this lens second hand but unfortunately it didn;t come with an instruction manual.

I'm not sure what the significance is of the two focus settings 1.8 and 6.5. Can anyone shed any light on how/when to use these and also how to read the dial thingy that has numbers in.

Hi David

It's the min focus distance i.e. from 1.8m to inf or 6.5m to infinity - saves it searching out of range :)

If you set it to 6.5 it'll stop it trying to focus on things any closer than that.. so if you were say, panning at the racees and you pan past someones head then it wont mess about trying to focus on it.. much..

It's just the way i'm describing it i'm sure. It's the number dial in the little window at very top of lens when fixed to camera (closest to camera body). DOes that make any better sense?

You're not embarrasing yourself at all :thumbs: The display is showing you the focus distance in feet and metres and tbh never used it :)

I don't have this lens, but I think you're referring to the wheel that tells you where the lens is focussing. (I don't know the technical term for it either :bonk:). It tells you how many feet/meters away the point of focus is. On my 100mm Macro, for example, if it's at 0.39, that means it's focussed on something 39cm away. I hope that makes sense (it's been a long day). :)

Oakey (and indeed everyone who replied to my posts) thank you so much. As I sais previously I am a newby to this site and the help and support i received in such a short period was amazing. Much appreciated.

I can only hope I can be of assistance to others in the future as my photography skills etc (hopefully) improve!
