Question for Wedding Togs - Metering techniques

Over the past year, I have worked quite hard on practising and refining my metering technique with which I have become quite comfortable.

I take a spot meter reading of my palm to put me in the ball park and then in manual mode, I tweak up or down to ensure that I have a good level of coverage on my histogram and no important areas are blinking.

However, I find that this can become quite tricky when working in changing scenes where the light can change very quickly. I was reading Neil van Neikerk's blog and he mentioned that he uses the matrix metering method, which I thought might have made fine tuning your exposure a lot harder.

Any help or advice on techniques employed by other togs would be greatly appreciated.

I can now finally show a really fantastic wedding from 30th July:

I've been waiting to blog this one since I shot it at the end of July. The lovely ladies over at Rock My Wedding asked me to keep it private as they're running a 3 day (!!!!) feature on it.

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Where to start with this wedding? I could start with the all-round magnificence of the day. Or perhaps with the sheer stunning-ness (is that even a word) of Becky. Or the calm, utterly charming Steve. Or the sublime eye for detail that this amazing couple showed with every element of the wedding. Or the sheer excellence of Bury Court Barn as a venue (a big thank you to Nicky for everything she did).

But no, there's only one way to start this wedding, and that's with the word EPIC. Epic for the journeys of those that arrived after events seemed set to prevent any guests, musicians or the registrar from arriving. Thanks to a perfect storm of big crashes on the A3, the A31 and a huge Hindu festival going on a few miles away our 1pm ceremony turned out to be a 2.50pm ceremony. Late then, but did we care? Nope (ok, maybe Becky did a teeny little bit). Didn't matter in the end though and WOW what a wedding we had. An absolute privilege to shoot from start to finish. Tears, laughter, elegance, vintage details everywhere. I loved every minute of it. Please can I have some more?

Becky - thank you for being so willing to go with everything. For giving this humble wedding photographer a dream bride to work with. Beauty, elegance, humour, wit. You have it all. You gave us two memorable lines yesterday - one I can't repeat here but you know the one I mean. The other, when your Mum was trying to curl her hair with little success, 'Mum, they're not even on'. Thank you, thank you.

Steve - buddy, you're an absolute gem. If you could have seen Becky when she read your letter you'd have cried yourself (again). I can't remember having to turn away because I was welling up before, but I did yesterday. You're a man out of time. A gentleman in the truest sense.

To you both, I wish you every happiness together. You're wonderful and were a joy. I might have mentioned that I'd have a job limiting the pictures when I blogged this one. I wasn't lying :)

Had a great day out, although the day got off to a bad start when my dad cut a rather large chunk out of his finger with a bread knife while trying to cut some bread for sandwiches, so after a trip to A+E to get it stuck back together we managed to get to Oulton Park just in time for the first race, so I had to do away with my plan to get over to the old hall side of the circuit which ive not been too for years.

I think my panning technique is getting much better (got a few pans at 200mm 1/80th second :D) although im not sure on the variety of the shots. im also not too keen on the IQ of shots taken above ISO200 on the 50d, But perhaps im expecting a little too much!

anyway the pictures!
1. open faced helmets give plenty of scope to see some facial expressions

2. Mighty Mclaren

3. gassing on the podium (i had my 70-200 on for this as i was passing by but it was too long to capture the full podium so ive cut the person in 3rd in half...)

4. Its how you have to drive 'em!

5. I thought this chap looked like Jim Clark when he was hustling his F3

6. I noticed that alot of the chevrons were breaking traction at the bottom of dear leap when changing gear so tried to capture it as they smoked the tyres up the hill

thanks for looking C+C always welcome!

I am struggling to find resources for learning/discussion without being bombarded with shoddy sites/advertising. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Shared a ton more (probably too many as I got carried away) on our blog so if you want to see lots more from this wedding check them out here > Wroxall Abbey Wedding Photography.
C&C welcome here as are polite comments on our blog.

1. Bride doing one of the BM's makeup

2. Semi posed. One BM didn't have a towel on so I asked her to change into one and she was happy to do so, sat them down and gave them some champagne and a few mins to chill.

3. This was a very quick grab because I had just put the dress over the brides head as all the BM's were busy.
Noah Isaac Walter Mitchell weighed in at £6 and change which i thought was quite cheap for today's fluctuating price index.

All three are doing well, post him a reply on his FB account.
Pretty new to digital slr photography, and being a big mouth, I have volunteered to take some photos at my sons swimming match this weekend. This means taking indoor photos without flash and using zoom, as I will only be able to take photos from the spectators stand. Any tips and advice would be appreciated, as I am supposed to be showing the photos to the club members on their website, so they need to be fairly good. I realise swimming is probably a hard sport to photograph well, but if I can at least get all my camera settings right, I will have a fighting chance to get some good snaps.
Thanks for any help...

Hi!

I had a portrait session last night which overall went well, but I was having some issues with focusing. It was on my part and not the cameras!

I use a D300s and I normally use single point and select the appropriate focus point, but when moving fast between compositions I found this fiddly and slow. So I then started pre focusing using the centre point and then recomposing, but looking through the shots there are more shots than I would like out of focus.

So my question is, how do you pro's handle your focusing when doing portrait work/ weddings etc? Do you focus lock and then recompose? Or select the correct point each time?

Many thanks in advance
