weekly St-ephen's 52 2012 - week 8 - Handmade added.

Hi, there, composing such a complex machine can't be easy.

The motion is great and it's bang on theme.

The red border looks a bit over saturate to me, especially the right section.

Cheers and good luck with Root...(y)

Nice shot for industry, love the motion you have captured.

Thanks guys. The composing is a bit difficult because there's always a little bit more interest outside the frame. I took loads of this, but I was handheld so most of them were blurred all over. I know what you mean about the red; I've just looked at the raw and it is just the same and I think a reasonable representation of the reality. These things were often picked out in a super vivid red or gold paint, just like this. I've toned the red down a touch, but any further and it definitely goes away from what it actually looks like.

Thanks for your comments, they're really valuable.

i like the movement you have captured here Stephen. The engine in motion is certainly bang on theme. I dont mind the saturation in the image, it is part of the detail you've captured so is true to what you've seen.
Maybe just a wee bit too central in its composition but thats being picky. All round good work (y) Iain

Alas I've missed your thread before now Stephen and what a cracking bunch of shots you have!

I wouldn't sigh at being a penny shy of a bar of chocolate I would have screamed and mugged someone! Mind you, I bet you sighed when the next theme was announced and you'd just shot some choccies!

Sweet is excellent, very clever and beautiful lighting.

Secure, again fantastic detail and lovely lighting. Thanks for the description as I know diddly squat about rock climbing!

Industry is also well taken. I think the red draws you around the image while motion blur adds interest(y) Having never been to Manchester it's nice to finally know what MOSI stands for!!!

I look forward to seeing your 52 progress.

oohhhh you picky beggar.. ;) No, you're right. I did think about moving it over to a third, but there were too many distractions introduced so I left it as it was.

Thank you, a chockie like me then :)

Well this week has been a struggle. Very busy with work and I haven't given this the attention I wanted to. I just shot a rose against white, altered its perspective and drew a root with the pen tool before filling it and dodge and burning it.

Its meant to be "rooted to the spot" Corny or what?

See me after class Must try harder :(

I'll do the rounds with as many posts as I can later...

Oh yes its cheating  but so is the use of photoshop ;)

Thats a whole new thread to discuss that one Stephen
I like your root photograph, very creative, good PP skills, something beyond my level in photoshop.
Its a clever take on the theme, good work all round (y) Iain

True! But the more I learn about photoshop the more I want to learn to take better photos that need less tweaking!

Absolutely Marsha. I couldn't agree more. It is also the case that you can learn to improve your photography so that the photoshop manipulation is easier. :)

Week 2 - Fear.

I wanted to say that fear is all in your head. In this case, fear of snakes? They're just in your head.
Harsh flash was meant to enhance the scarey look.

My nephew was good enough to pose whilst swallowing his snake which is called Connie :)

That's really gross. I'm scared just looking at it. The thing nightmares are made of. It's really well composed, and excellent PP work. I hate it but it's good.(y)

Exactly, the less 'fixing' the better! The odd levels tweak or crop are needed sometimes, but having to sort exposure white balance and so on is something I want to reduce!

But it's nice to know that I can reduce clutter in photos of my kids if necessary!

I wish I could reduce kids clutter generally

I don't know if you'd be interested in some really good photoshopping, but you may find these worth a look. (I'm not connected to them in any way) Rocket Studio and Sugar Digital
(look at their retouching link) are two fabulous commercial sites specialising in that sort of work.

Thank you, I hope you don't have nightmares :)

This one was an easy choice for me. While I was doing some work for a local auctioneer I noticed this on his desk. After some discussion it transpired that this dates back to approx. AD300, and is apparently Roman. Well I thought this was interesting, but it seems I was unique in this respect because it had failed to attract any bids at several sales. Anyway, I was given this pot by the auctioneer.
It is a lovely piece to touch, and you can see and feel where the potter's fingers have rubbed when it was thrown. So, not only is it old, but its Handmade.

Catching up on threads and found this one I haven’t commented on before…….

Direction – Nicely lit

Fear – Great shot. Very well edited.

Sigh – I like this although as you’ve said yourself the price tag looks a bit false

Sweet – Another well executed shot

Secure – I like this one a lot. The lighting and sharpness is spot on

Industry – Spot on with the theme

Root – I like the idea. Cheating? mmmm not sure – maybe too false for me

Handmade – This could possibly turn out to be the oldest subject on this theme

Hi Stephen,

What a great set of images, like them all. Don't like snakes much and almost screamed out loud when I saw your fear shot...still can't take a proper look at it! Had a good look at the rest though and think they are all very well shot and composed. I tried a similar shot for sweet, yours is heaps and stacks better than mine was (y)but yeah wine gums are surprisingly messy!
Well done, great takes on the themes.

Carol

lovely pot (lucky you) and great shot

back in the dayu when everything was handmade, super record shot.

Great shot and great item! I really think you've done it justice :)

Thank you everyone. With 20-20 hindsight, I should've put something in for scale. It looks bigger on screen than it is; it stands just under 4" tall (100mm)

Manda, I took dozens, loads were blurred because they were hand held, loads were just, well, rubbish. :(

DrRusty, yes I agree. Quite tragic, but then again, if it were of higher value I don't think I'd have it.

Hi Stephen, playing catch up.

Secure - Good take on the theme, well lit and really like the colours. Really nice and sharp, would make a nice product shot that.

Sweet - A very well though out and executed photo. One of my favorites for this theme, good work.

Industry - Another good take on the theme and really like the way you have captured it.

Root - Really like the idea but it was only when I read your description that I saw rooted to the spot. Really good PP but not really my cup of tea to be honest.

Handmade - Now this is more like it, really like this one. The background and lighting really help bring out the detail and texture in this photo. Bang on theme, excellent photo :)
