as i am now seriously thinking about one does anyone have any shots taken with this?

Thanks

Yes,I do.........:)

You want to speak to Puddleduck, I think he had one of these for quite a while and had a lot of success with it. Very sharp both with and without convertors by all accounts.

First one I found.

Little PP.

D200 with the 300 on it, F4,ISO 400 at 1/160.

Any issues are probably due to my technique, but a few to add to the mixer. One thing I can comment on is AF speed (I had the AF-S version, not sure if there is a non AF-S version), which was excellent. Not quite up there with an 80-200 2.8 AF-S, but not far behind, and there was very little difference when using the TC14E-II.

Handheld, Wide open on a Nikon D50...

IMHO the 300mm f/4 AF-S is one of Nikon's optical jewels.

Some great images there puddleduck, and I agree that this is a great lens optically. But surely an 800-pixel image doesn't reaally demonstrate that? You could take pictures through the bottom of a milk bottle and they'd be sharp at that resolution.

whitey, what were you hoping to learn when you asked to see some images taken with this lens?

Well I'm always happy to provide 100% if asked.

However the forum rules are for images no more than 800x across. I do agree you can't judge optics re-sized for web - hence my offer to supply some prints, this is the only way to truly evaluate any lens (or camera for that matter)

This lens is one of the best I've ever used for fab printed output :)

i was hoping for some nice shots and across a couple of forums with the links its provided, the lens looks sharp and what i would expect

if anyone would like to email me one of the higher res files to steven@imagesbysw.com that would be great

Thanks

Look at some of Gribbsy's motorsport threads from 2008, a lot of those will be with the 300 f4.... its very good and no mistake.

I'd actually say it could be sharper than the 70-200 VR, although obviously not as flexible!

Its definately sharper than a 70-200 VR, no question about it.

Put a 1.4x TC on the 70-200 VR and the 300mm f/4 trouces it.

please dont email but post a link to 100% please, I'm also interested in this lens.

300 f/4 is a cracking lens for the money. I used it a lot last year, mainly with teleconvertors. The light weight is a big advantage over the 2.8 which I've now upgraded to. My only criticism is it can be quite contrasty, particularly in harsh summer light.
