My mate has been working on his pride and joy every Saturday for 18 months.
He has recently finished. He basically stripped the whole car, every single bit of it, and rebuilt and repainted it.

It looked good before, it looks AMAZING now!!

It has a 2L twin cam engine, and is around 200hp.
It goes like a bleeding rocket :D

Thanks for looking. There's a few more on my flickr if interested ;)

Stunning shots of a stunning car. What's the engine out of?

Very nice - haven't seen one of those for many years - the last shot is actually really nice - should have took a couple of the interior as well.... (y)

Thanks Ian.

Ah now you've got me!!!
I think it's the original engine, but he's changed and tweaked it allot.

I shall ask him for more info!

(I'm not very savvy on these things :wacky: )

Cheers Derek.

It's his pride and joy (quite rightly so!)

The interior is VERY basic, as he has built it all from scratch.
It's basically a shell and a home-made (very impressive) dash board.

yes all the genuine 131 Abarths were LHD (y)

this is more than likely based on a 131 Mirafiori Sport which was a 2 litre twincam with a 5 speed gearbox.
people used to call them the Italian RS 2000 but tbh it was the better car!
the escort had some nice recaro seats but that was as special as it got. the cortina engine was average at best
there was an older 131 that had the 2 door bodyshell but that was a low spec 1300 engined car & was quite a bit older. it looks like your buddy has got the correct early type fluted bonnet & bootlid from one of these cars (y)

thats a vey nice replica with good attention to detail. fair play to him for getting all the right bits & all his hard work (y)
mine wasn't so fortunate, the bodykit was sold to somebody from the owners club & the remains of the bodyshell went to the scrapman :crying:

Cheers guys (y)

Adam I believe it is (was?) a 131 Mirafiori Sport.

You seem to know your stuff. You'd get on very well with Pete!!!

Thanks for the excellent post.

Really stunning images of a very impressive car. I think it would give many modern cars a run for their money around a track.

The egine is probaly a Fiat 2ltr twink which in it's day was used extensivly by everyone simply becuse straight out of the box was quite powerfull for the time.If memory serves me right in std from around 125bhp,which in the late 70'/early 80's was considered as cheap power and was usually sen transplanted into various rally and cistom cars.

Dave

That is a really good set.
You have processed the HDR nicely.
Awesome car. Love those huge wheel arches.

Great shots, I used to have a 131 2000TC, rust bucket with the autochoke popping open all the time but great fun :D

Great stuff Andy, love the look of it and the HDR is just right for me, really makes it pop!!

Great set of a great looking car! He's put a lot of work into that and your HDR really compliments the colour! (y)

But why, oh why did you let it get wet for shot #3? ... Now the electrics won't work ... soon we'll start to hear the rust bubbling ... ;)

Cheers guys (y)

yes i had a 131 Sport in my garage for a long time. i drove it til it was knackered. spent a couple of years collecting parts for its transformation. another couple of years of sporadic tinkering followed by ten years total neglect before the decent parts i still had were sold to a guy with an original! & the remains still with things like adsjustable konis etc went off with a breaker :crying:

your mates car has the tarmac spec arches fitted as the tops are almost flat, my car had the forest styled arches which sloped down & didn't go as wide. looks lovely in orange too (y)

i did the escort thing, mk1 mexico rally car, mk1 bubble arched RS2000, mk2 van with mexico running gear etc but the Fiat was a much better car all round.
really glad you posted these pics, brought backsome good memories

Dave

there were a few different power outputs on these engines as std depending on what car it was fitted to eg the auto's had slightly higher compression than the manuals but the sport was beter again with knobblier cams :naughty:
115bhp for a std sport i think but just fitting a pair of DCOE'S gave over 25bhp with no other mods (y)

the engine was considered a bit of a classic in Italian car circles as it was designed by Aurelio Lampredi the guy who designed Feraris Formula1 engines in the 60's (y)

pretty sure that engine was used in Fiats cars for getting on 30 years??
i can definitely remember its 25th anniversary back in the 90's
long time ago now so could be wrong, memorys not what it was

Fiat twin cam was introduced in the 1960s and continued into the 1990s with the Fiat Coupe 16v.

I am building a Lancia Montecarlo with a heavily tuned engine (same as this) - high compression pistons, big valve head, race cams, twin 45 DCOWs, lightened flywheel and fully balanced bottom end, plus different gear ratios.

Nice photography
I used to have a 131 sports back in the day
great job on the car too.

can you ask him what back axle he's using?
i was going to 5 link a baby Atlas from a Gp4 escort in mine for strength & simplicity BUT the real 131 Abarths had an independant rear end & at the time i was building mine there wasn't a particularly good choice of anything suitable. i nearly went with a Nissan Silvia rear end at one point :)

Not really helpful but

No 7.........:clap::clap::clap:(y)(y)(y)

Belter....

Gorgeous piece of non rusted Italian Steel.

I have had 127's Uno's Punto's.... that is just lovely.

A great set, I like number 2 best. I think the car being yellow definately helps make a statement.

Thanks guys (and gals!!)

Appreciate your comments (y)

(Adam, will get back to you on that!)

don't go out of your way Andy it was just a general hmmm i wonder what kinda axle he's running query. just interested to see how far he went to recreate the rallycar including the bits you can't see, as bodywork wise its spot on (y)

i like it a lot

No probs.

I've texted him and asked but he's not answered yet!!

numbers 8 + 9 look like they've been through one of the iphone apps that makes everything look like a miniature model.

Cheers Adam.
I have forwarded it onto him.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he turned up in one of them here soon :D

Only just latched onto this thread, gorgeous looking car and nicely shot (y)
Nothing like keeping a low profile then :D
