I've decided i need to reinvigorate my photography - as lately i only seem to have touched the camera for weddings. Not being a moose to do things by halves and inspired by matts 700+ and some i'm setting myself the challenge of 1 shot a day for a thousand days.

and all shots to be outside of my comfort zone - so you won't be seeing any weddings on here. All constructive crit welcome

Starting off, Day one "one step at a time"

stairs_low_res.jpg

This is a spiral staircase inside the tower at Shute Barton , a 14th century manor house in East Devon - I can't decide if i like having the newel post in there or not but it was very tight for space and I couldn't find a way of framing without it

Good luck. I did 2 years of one shot per day, but couldn't stretch myself to a 3rd year to hit that magical 1000!

Welcome Monseur moose to challenge of a lifetime... Matt is an inspiration ...and your first shot is a great opening.

Agreed a good start Pete.....Best of luck with your other 999 !!!

Day 2 - Windscreen rain

rain3.jpg

absolutely hissing it down today - so there i sat running out of time and thinking damn rain stopping me taking pictures - so i said the hell with i'll photograph the rain (y)

with a fuji F10 (becauise my DSLR was in the boot and I didnt want to get it soaked getting it out) set to macro - cropped and levels tweaked in post

Only 998 to go.
What could possibly go wrong?

good luck with it, but just out of curiosity, do you (or anyone doing a challenge) have a personal forfeit if you miss a day?
A bit extra encouragement could only help

Missing a day results in Firing Squad at Dawn :naughty:

I'm going to be away from my computer and the forum for 9 days so days 3-11 will be posted in bulk when i get back - so no firing squad for me ;)

Now that i've finished processing images from my week away I have a bit of catching up to do

Day 3 Sundial

day3.jpg

Day 4 Pre reception (A bit of a cheat here - I know i said no weddings but i spent the whole of this day photographing a wedding, so I had to squeeze this shot for myself in to the pre reception timeslot )

day_4.jpg

Day 5 arches within arches

day_5.jpg

Day 6 Wall Lizard

day_6.jpg

Day 7 church church church

day_7.jpg

Day 8 Mottistone Manor

day_8.jpg

Day 9 "load with common shell "

day_9.jpg

Day 10 "just call me cliff"

day_10.jpg

Day 11, Lymington harbour from seaward (shot off a wightlink ferry near sunset)

day_11.jpg

and thats us up to date - just got to find something to shoot today now

That last shot looks almost like a watercolour. It's gorgeous.

Thanks tony - I was please with how its turned out , given that it was shot from a moving ferry through a window and without the benefit of a tripod , and the only PP its had is a slight crop to remove a reflection and a bit of a tweak on levels

Day 12 - barking up the wrong tree

day_12.jpg

I was drawn to this old tree in my local wood by the interesting textures, leading lines and the nicely backlit treeferns - however i'm not entirely happy with how its turned out - the burnt out sky to the right is distracting (though difficult to avoid shooting straight up) I probably should have zoomed further in and framed to eliminate the sky

Its only just round the corner from my house so I'll maybe revisit it another day with more time.

Day 13 Bit of a struggle to find a decent image today - and to be honest i'd nearly forgotten and had packed the gear away ready for a trip out tommorow when i remembered , so i was reduced to photographing the gear

day_13.jpg

not that happy with the last couple tbh so moving it up a gear again tommorow

Some really nice photo's from your time away I'm particularly liking days 7 and 8 (y) 8 is just great the way that the path leads you into the manor (y) looks like a wonderful place (y)

as to being not happy with the last couple of shots that can some times be a good thing, I know when I produce a shot that I'm really not happy with it acts as a real driver for me to get my arse in gear to get some better shots in (y)

Matt

Cheers matt - i got some other nice shots at mottistone -its a trove of photo ops - I'll put some more up on a seperate thread once i've finished the processing.

7 is godshill model village - being a model of godshill the model has a model model village , hence the model model church, with the model church, and then the real church all in a line. I've got a bunch of other shots from there as well which again i'll get the best of up in the next couple of days

and yes the last couple of days have been a disapointment - yesterdays had potential but i failed to realise it (it was with the compact - i might revisit the same shot with the DSLR and macro), and today's was very poor

still i've got some ideas for tommorow (techincally today now) - both an outdoor idea and an indoor back up plan if the weather doesnt play ball.

Day 14 : One ring to rule them all...
Quite a few people shooting wedding rings on bibles at the mo , so i thought i'd do something a little different

day_14.jpg

(hopefully this won't inspire yv to steal my wedding ring and throw it into a volcano)

You really seem to be getting into the swing of the challenge! :)
I love that last shot of the ring, great idea!

Day 15 in a spin...

two shots today because i couldnt decide which i liked better (thoughts on that welcome) - both abstracts of the inside of my washing machine (ive left the WB inspired blue cast on deliberately because i think it adds to the shot) - from which you can understand that yes, its still heaving it down

day_15_a.jpg

day_15b.jpg

Like the One ring shot, but have to agree with Matt about the text on the right: just the text inside the ring in focus would have been much better I think.

Day 16 , down to the wire...

day_16.jpg

I like the concept (i'm really enjoying the challenge of taking day to day objects and making pictures with them) - however i'm not sure i've nailed the focus on this - it was difficult to get a shallow enough dof to be creative but still enough to get the hands and figures in focus -

a very early Day 17: Money, Money, Money

day_17.jpg

I'm going to be busy over the weekend so i'll be posting days 18 and 19 in bulk next week

Yeah cheers matt - with day 16 i think its partly the watch i used - my CAT tough watch has a reinforced front bezel and thats making photography through it harder. I might try again with an old fob watch or a clock or something similar later - I'll have to look arround for some props

Glad you like day 17 - I did wonder if that needed more dof - but when i tried it at f4 it didnt look right - the shot there is at f2.8

catching up after a weekend with no web access

Day 18 reflective abstract : This is actually the inside of a toilet roll storage container in my mum's bathroom - i was drawn to it by the weird reflections - which I originally noticed while sitting on the 'throne'
day_18.jpg

Day 19 orchid : theres unfortunately a fair bit of noise here - the light was v. poor so i had to bump up the ISO - I also shot it in jpeg as i knew i wouldnt have time to process any raws - not bad, but 'could try harder'

day_19.jpg

and today Day 20 'as sharp as a knife' or actually not - I tried to make a selective dof on this to focus attention on the edge - but i'm not sure its worked - it might have been better with the whole knife in focus , hmm and indeed ho

day_20.jpg

Only you could make a sharp nice soft

now you know why they call me big soft moose - and yes the execution on that could have been a lot better, I've had a rather hard day dealing with the fact that we've got about £10k of flood damage across the property so my shot of the day was a bit rushed - I'm sure if i'd spent more time i'd have got a better execution.

(Me thinks I need a break away from macro and go photograph some landscapes or summat)

Incidentally you can see the sort of crap i've had to deal with the aftermath of today here

catching up again - more macro compositions (because it is still raining - if it doesnt stop soon I may have to build an ark)

day 21 : talk what

day_21.jpg

Day 22 : Rabbit , Rabbit, Rabbit (cocked up the DoF on this one :bonk: )

day_22.jpg

Day 23 : getting to the point

day_23.jpg

I think that the pencil one would have been better with a sharp point but maybe that was what you were going for ;) as to the rabbit's yes mate you did cock that one up :bang: I'm reliably informed it's Talk Pornography :cautious:

Matt

I figgured sharp point had been done to death ...... plus i couldnt find a pencil sharpner :cautious:

I did wonder about writing something with it and resting the pencil after it, may be " it's still 'king raining ! "

It's not been good sad so say it's forecast to keep on coming, it's crap but we have to deal with it :( a brilliant photographer and good friend of mine from over in the states once said to me, that if he didn't go out taking photo's in the rain we would never take any photo's  he lives in Oregon :D this is one of his photo's from today showing he gets clear skys sometimes, how stunning is this http://www.flickr.com/photos/rowdey/7555244052
