I've completely disappeared from Google

Somewhere in the last month or so, my website has completely disappeared from Google

Despite a few concerns, last December I had moved over to a flash website from bludomain but the page ranking remained the same until recently, I had made updates to the keyword list within my bludomain account and noticed that a week or so later, the google ranking and info on my site had also been updated.
Now my photography pages have completely vanished. If it weren't for my blog and facebook pages, I wouldn't be there at all :(

I update at least 2-3 times a month adding more event dates and making changes, so it's not like the site becomes idle warranting a drop in ranking, the site has disappeared and is no where to be seen based on searches such as 'Tomas Whitehouse' and 'Tomas Whitehouse Photography'. Previously both returned a no 1 google ranking position.

I am aware that google has issues with ranking flash sites but after a quick chat with our right honourable Hacker (Colin Greenlees), who also has a website from the same company.
Colin's ranking vanished but then returned without explanation
Both of Col's sites are at first and second position on a search of 'Greenlees Photography' so for me this relaly eliminates the flash indexing being the problem.

One thought that I had is that I bought the domain name 'www.tomaswhitehouse.com' from fasthosts some 18 months ago and I link my site accordingly.
Both the bludomain account and fashosts allow allow meta data and keyword tags in the configuration menu's, these were identical.
I did read somewhere that google does not the repitition of keywords so as of last night, I made them different.

Could this have been the problem?

Any help or trouble shooting would be gratefully recieved although I would appreciate the 'don't have flash' or 'I hate flash' comments, it's working for a large amount of others so I know it's me or a set up issue at least.

All the best & cheers for lookin'.

Tomas

Even more alarming, the number one position on Google says that you died in 1929! ;)

Could be something to do with the flash website or you could have been sandboxed.
Worth contacting Google to see if the latter has happened.

Sandboxed? sounds interesting, will do, just out of interest, what does it mean mate?

I am aware that Google are quite strict about keyword stuffing and such. To the extent that they will remove sites that don't meet with their rules.

Do you have hidden keywords on your site or anything like that? I couldn't see any on your homepage...

I'll ask my wife to have a look later. She's the SEO expert in this house :). PM me in a couple of days if you've still had no joy and I haven't responded. I have a terrible memory..

What a gent! That's very kind Sir. Will do (y)

They've just found out what you're really like and they don't want you're sort on there! ;)

Have a look at Google Webmaster tools, that should tell you what's up.

It is also worth reading their SEO pdf, tells you exactly what you need to do!

Same thing happened to me a while ago..I'd spent quite a lot of time adding to listings etc and maybe I "oversaturated" the site..1 week later however the site re-appeared but much further up the rankings !!

Maybe give it a few days:shrug:

Simon

Thanks bud, I thought I'd done that put realised it was a much older version of my site I had done it for. All done now cheers.

Just finished verifying and adding a site map, cheers,
I'm still a complete puddin when it comes to this kind of thing though, I used to build my own and update my own site with flash before December and really didn'y have the time for it, hence a template.

Could be too mate, cheers. (y)

Still no change folks .

Since I posted, I've verified my site with Google webmaster tools and added a sitemap.
Still the only way of successfully getting my website to show in any google search results is to search the direct address www.tomaswhitehouse.com

'tomas whitehouse' and 'tomas whitehouse photography' used to yield a number one page ranking result, now, I'm nowhere to be seen.

I'm completely stumped, read through the faq's on google webmaster and frankly my head is hurting :crying:

I just can't understand why one moment it's fine and number one in the search results and the next it's gawn.

thought google worked on links to and from pages rather than metadata etc?

I dunno  I'm no expert or even 'knowledgeable' just very interested to know why I have disappeared.

I think there must be some sort of block, as the fact that your domain is tomaswhitehouse automatically means you should be showing for any search on 'tomas whitehouse' so long as you have an active index page.

This is strange mate, im bludomain aswell and no problems for me. Don't you just wish google had a contact number! Infact they must do somewhere.....

Yeah, It's piddlin me off, I'm fairly sure that the error is nothing to do with an indexing problem for flash sites, it works fine for you and Hacker so that kind rules it out.

I'm just going through Google forums now, I'm slowly sifting my through similar issues but I can't find anything that matches my problem, yet.

This is a right head doo'er and I understand very little :bang:

Yeah, it would be logical wouldn't it mate, I'm just reading a thread on the webmaster forums regarding hacks, blocks and penalization?

It's like trying to decipher hieroglyphics! It makes no sense to me, I just know that there is a strange problem and I want to get it fixed. :(

Well, I posted a query on the forums and thankfully I had an 'answer' the only problem is that I can't decipher the answer :bang:

The chap said 'Not a lot there, the robots see this - http://www.seo-browser.com/index.php?actionType=advanced&saveURL=true

Try searching for "Minty Fresh" to explain why you ranked well for a little bit.'

Does anyone know what this means? I'm really no expert and I know the chaps trying to help but I'm none the wiser.

Personally think it might have something to do with either it being a flash site or over usage of keywords/metatags? Google even recognise splash pages as "spam" under their definition of the term. It may even be the case that its neither one nor the other but a combination of all of the above!

I'm a Comp Sci student and our lecturers have said out loud that flash sites won't get ranked correctly or at all (even if it's only a splash page) by some major search engines, especially Google, who have quite strict terms for listings. However, you can pay Google to list your website to be the guaranteed top link for certain search terms but prices vary from what I can gather.

Either way I hope you get it sorted! Nothing worse than paying for domain, hosting etc and finding your site doesn't get any hits! :(

How would the flash indexing theory explain that other members here have the same deal as me (flash site with same designer) and they have top ranking?

This isn't the case though, it worked, I was on there and now I'm not
Luke and Hacker are fine, same designer, same flash format.

Cheers buddy.
My site gets hits though, there's plenty there to find my site through my blog and facebook page but it's hardly the proper channels, have a look at the post above and see if you can make any sense for the response I received on the google webmaser forum.

It does seem you are pretty weak on indexed content etc, but as you say, I don't understand why it would have been all of a sudden.

As a reference one of the sites I run has come up with these results, we come up top searching for our name/tagline.

I'm clueless as you are on SEO, but I would say you need to put a bit more descriptive content on your main page. A 3/4 line paragraph describing who you are and what services you offer just under the three images on your home page may make a difference.

Actually, as I specialise in SEO I've taken a quick look at your site and its be fair its not rich in keywords at all - my guess it will be a blip and you will be back in the rankings at some point. I notice the last cache date for google was end of may so I suspect you may see some results in 3-4 days time on the next cache cycle.

You may actually want to consider placing some content on the first page that is actually relevant to what you do as I dont see much at all.

Maybe try adding "thomaswhithouse, thomas, whitehouse" to your meta information. None of these are listed then add a new line under the info already in the meta information.

<meta name="robots" content="index, follow">

This means when a spider from google or another serach engine visits your page it will know it should index your main page then follow all the links from it throughout your website. Should help some.

then add under that

<meta name="revisit" content="7 days">

This will invite the spiders back to update your website in err 7 days time. Change to 14, 21 depending on how often you want your content updated.

Hope this helps

As far as I know, sometimes whether or not a site is deemed as "spam" is done manually by a human being but not in all cases. It may be that you're simply waiting in a queue of others waiting to be authorised since the site changed :)

Google has it's moments. I disappeared off the radar for about a month once without warning or change to my site. A few weeks later, boom! Back I was at no.1!

Have you tried this?

Spence

Yes, I did sign up just a few days ago, I suppose it may take a little while for it to take effect? Thanks for looking mate, appreciated.

It does seem you are pretty weak on indexed content etc, but as you say, I don't understand why it would have been all of a sudden.

Yeah, it's really confusing.

Noted, will do and thanks very much for looking and replying. I'm very grateful.

Cheers muchly! I'm going to get to work on this today.

I do have a question, I have two separate drop boxes to fill in metadata and keywords, with bludomain for the flash site and then again with my domain name (fasthosts), which is going to be more effective or sensible to use as I've heard that Google doesn't like repeated keywords?

Very much appreciated (y)

How do I enter the HTML? would it be a case of signing to to cpanelx and hunting a splash page or html file down and entering the code you've kindly provided?

Google has it's moments. I disappeared off the radar for about a month once without warning or change to my site. A few weeks later, boom! Back I was at no.1!

Well, I suppose if I do return to number 1, I'll at least have learned something, I'm a complete k*****r when it comes to things like this, this is why I bought a template with simple ergonomics in the first place, I haven't the time or the know how to write my own.

Cheers for you help folks. I am very grateful. (y)

Correct. Put the two extra lines of meta elements below the existing ones. As long it's placed within the "head" element, everything should be dandy :).

Its no surprise - this is what you are expecting google to index: essentially - What google sees..

So following on from my last post, you are basically telling google to index your site based on the following text

TOMAS WHITEHOUSE P H O T O G R A P H Y Portraits Figure Skating please disable any popup blockers minimum recommended screen resolution 1024 x 768 px this site requires Flash Player 6 or later GET FLASH PLAYER

It will then cross reference this against the keywords and title:

Page Title:Tomas Whitehouse Photography
Meta Keywords:
Tomas Whitehouse, TW, Helsinki, Portfolio, Photographer, Photography, Valokuvaaja, Macabre, Atmospheric, Dark, Sinister, Taitoluistelu, magazine, creative, portraits, dynamics, on location, Nikon, strobist

There isnt exactly a crossover there!

The point I am making is you are leaving very few words to google to actually index you with. What search phrase could ever work - and not bring up all the other photographers with flash sites and no content? Whats more - all the photographers that have real content, will be leages ahead of you, just on the words they have fed to Google. This is why you have dissapeared off of google, because:

Google reads TEXT not images, Google reads TEXT not Flash, Google needs TEXT in order to provide a text based search to its users

This is a really easy concept. You can have text and fancy moving graphics (DHTML), you can use text and images (Write something about the images), You can have text and movies (write something about the movie) etc. etc.

Its no surprise - this is what you are expecting google to index: essentially - What google sees..

Look, I'm not expecting anything, looks like you missed the fact that I have I am completely new to this despite mentioning it several times above. It maybe no surprise to you.

I havent a clue when it comes to stuff like this, you may mean your post in the the very best of intentions but I'm afraid your not helping, just posting random code without any explanations as to what it does or where it's supposed to go.

Im not being funny, but you even stuffed the word photography!!!

Again, I haven't 'stuffed' anything thanks.

These are my options:

Picture1fasthostoption.jpg

Picture2bludomain.jpg

stuffed - as in spelt it "P H O T A G R A P H Y" is someone going to google that?

stuffed - as in spelt it "P H O T A G R A P H Y" is someone going to google that?

No they wouldn't because you've spelt it wrong. (check other posts above if you don't believe me)

Plus I haven't put it there in the first place, I didn't even know it was there, or if it would cause a problem.
