You've already told us the technical issues and why - my comments are that the composition is great, you caught that little thing at just the right time and the fact that the sky is completely whited out works in your favour - makes it a pretty 'clean' background against which you can place your subject.
Ideally, you would have had a phone call from some higher entity to warn you that a bird would be in your garden in 15 minutes, but since you didn't this is a great shot!

Thank you Sam, I appreciate your comment, don't suppose you happen to have a number for the higher entity so I can ask

Thank you, I have wanted to see one for ages, they look so different to the normal sparrows & starlings in the garden. I was amazed though that 1 thrush chased them off.

6th January 2013
All the gear, no idea Well, today was going to be such a simple day, photograph the back door to the church hall that I've liked since I was a child and the bonus of this shot is that my favourite coffee shop is next door, so photography followed by coffee sounded tempting for a Sunday morning. So off I trot, get there with camera and tripod get set up and the first problem presents itself, I've left the tripod plate on my other camera at home, hey ho, will just do some handheld shots, so do them, have coffee (that was very nice), go home, look at shots & think hmmm, would have been better with a longer exposure on the tripod. Ok, gear back in car, back down to town get set up and....... DOH, left the memory card at home, so back home pick up card and get set up again, this time everything in hand & get the shot, only to realise that the local nutter is standing behind me, now not wanting to get involved, I pack the tripod away quick smart, big mistake as caught finger in it causing a blister, making me bite my lip and mutter curses under my breath. Hence the title of the shot & why I am off to lie down in a darkened room. Enjoy! ![]() 6th-January-2013 by Sarah Brooke, on Flickr Last edited by whipspeed; 06-01-2013 at 13:13. |

Wonderful story
so is this from the 1st try or the 3rd? Whichever it is, it is still a great shot - loads of detail I like to look at ..... paint peeling on the bottom of the door, the stone markings and even the moss on the step Wonderful - Great work

3rd try, 1st lacked a little detail as hand holding at a higher shutter speed, this was ISO100 at 1 sec, so lots of detail recorded & was last shot before & trapped my finger trying to make the getaway

I keep hearing about Miranda... Will need to look out for it!
Sounds like an eventful day to get the shot but it was worth it! I love the colours.

Really good shot and I love the story behind it! I love it as it is and think that the colour of the door is very interesting against the brick/stonework surrounding it, it really pops pit against it, but would also be interested to see it in monochrome.
![]() There are a couple of buildings around here which used to be schools and still have the 'Boys' and 'Girls' in the stone above them, so might add that to my list of photos to take! |

Thank you, I do like the colour of our local Ironstone as well. I am just working on a mono conversion, so I will post it here later.
