I don't really know alot about Nikon lenses so if there's alternatives that would be more suited, let me know and i'l change it.

Oh and the prices are just estimates.

Just out of interest why haven't you suggested the 350/400D for sport?

no D3 for.......anything

Nikon flagship doesn't make it on the board....:(....damn, I knew it was rubbish...;)

Actually, thats a damn fine attempt, it seems you have a budget to keep the list a reasonable length ?

no sigma /tamron or other 3rd party lenses, and is the D300 not good for anything but sport?

Also, i'd imagine, well i know a tripod is essential for landscape work

For sport bodies I put the fastest FPS cameras. Didn't put the 350D/400D for sport becuase it's only 3FPS.

All of the cameras on the chart can be use for every type of photography, it's just a way of pinpointing specific advantages. Not really saying that the D300 is only good for sports, or the 5D is only good for landscape, but these are the areas said bodys will excell in.

I didn't include the Canon 1D seris or Nikon D2 and D3 seris becuase they are professional cameras, and I don't think pros are really going to need to use this chart to pick a body. I know that there are loads of pro lenses on there, but I think that people who arn't pros still use professional lenses more than professional bodies.

Ideally it's a chart showing cameras that you can get for under £1,000 becuase that's where most, if not all, beginners will have their budgets.

As the title suggests, it's for people who are always asking what kit they should buy, people who buy a 1D or D3 are going to buy it because they know it's what they need, not becuase someone told them it was good.

There's a distinct lack of primes on there, but i guess people who buy primes aren't the kind to need a chart to help them choose kit :D

Also why do your wildlife lenses top out at 200mm? Most wildlife photographers (eg. for birds) would be wanting much longer...

Hmm. I see no mention of Pentax, Olympus etc
Are they banned from this forum?

This is really difficult to cover all possibilities and eventualities, but it does show you can buy a "pro" body for £1000.
There are 300 & 400mm lenses in Wildlife, they might not be pro spec but new starters would keel over with all the extra noughts...

You know they're not Sawman. I think the OP was probably trying to put together an initial document as a "taster" to see if people thought it would be useful. If he has no knowledge of the Pentax, Oly etc bodies, then he'd be struggling to place them on the chart anyway wouldn't he - I know I couldn't!

Looks like a handy document which might well prove useful for pointing newbies in the direction of. Good stuff. I agree with the comment regarding a tripod needing adding for landscapes though - above filters IMO.

Ok i'l make some changes.

I didn't put Pentax and Olympus on there becuase I don't know enough about the range.

Well if I was a beginner I would want to know ALL the choices. The way that reads there is only a choice of two makes.
If the writer of the list feels he hasnt the knowledge of other makes then at the very least he should have said so.

8utters, this is a good guide - I tried to create something similar myself a few months back but starting at the other end of things (a system to aim for in each system). I hate to say it but sawman has a point (albeit a badly and insesitvely put point) about the inclusion of the "others". I don't know much about them myself otherwise I'd offer to help you (y) having said that by sticking to Nikon or Canon it's hard to go wrong.

I suppose this is something a wiki type environment could be useful for, a couple of people could colaberate to create a really useful resorce - any plans on this front Marcel; a TP Wiki on the way?

nice one

I would say replace the nikon 40mm 1.4 with the 1.8. After reading lots of reviews, it appears that it is a sharper lens and less than half the price it would seem to me to be a better choice

always difficult to develop decision trees like this, especially when you are almost jumping the 'why' stage and aiming to deliver answers.

can I tentatively make 2 suggestions...

1. A little explanation of the key features associated with each of these areas would help everyone understand the recomendations and fit in other alternatives based on documented features. It would also give this a longer timeline as the feature sets required will remain long after the particular models have passed.

2. Given the huge numbers of flowers and insects photographed, and the relatively specialised needs in this area might you add a 'close up' section? I am not thinking about extreme macro hence this rather than a macro heading.

It's good to see threads like this that try to look at the needs for people, and raise general understanding.

does the canon 10-22 f/3.5 fit on a 300d. Probably not eh

That lens is 499 on jessops

What a nice thing to do. :)

Obviously it cant have everything but what a great starting point.

Excellent idea OP - maybe could be expanded a bit more - I for one welcome any info as I battle to decide what to go out and buy!

I realise there are many more options and that a line has to be drawn somewhere. I think a list of the possibly most popular dslr's most people would go for is a great idea. I'd love some of the top-of-the-range stuff, but really can't justify my limited knowledge and ability stretchig that far - yet.

Nice one.

I agree, thanks for taking the time to put this together.

I can see this being very useful. Well done for the effort you put into this (y)
