Here's a web site with an explanation of focus problems, testing for them and how to go about it. There's a pdf download of the same stuff but including the test charts as well.

He's using a D70 but the same applies to all makes.

Thanks, good link im going to check a couple of my lenses, im quite sure the issues I have is my fault but you never know.
