It's actually taken against the sky. I had a tricky job getting into the right position so that there was no other greenery in the shot.
I think I agree about the stem, and I might try picking the flowers and putting them against another background, black maybe.
It's a Nikon D40 with a sigma 180mm macro lens.
Not to bad for an outdated camera?
The sweet pea shot is a bit more experimental. Any one care to comment? I don't mind criticism, so don't hold back.

The fly in number one seemed to be having a wash at the time, as it kept wiping itself. I've never really thought about the personal hygiene habits of flies. I expect there's a PhD thesis waiting for someone (or maybe it ahs already been done).
I spent a while trying to track insects in the garden thismorning. I'm not sure of the quality of these and would welcome comments and advice from some of the insect experts on the forum.

Thanks for the comments. No problems with you editing, mobile virgin. The result is good. I have never used the high pass filter, and don't know much about this. I need to read up on it. Any tips on how best to use it and what for?
I don't seem to be photographing anything other than lowers at the moment.

I've never seen a bird photo quite like that. I love the position of it's wings. I agree about the sharpening and lightening, but I think it is a great capture.
