Parents' phones are generally full of kids and pets photos all taken looking down from a lofty height which is unflattering and doesn't capture the vibe of the moment.
Oh and have painkillers to hand, the noise can be deafening...

You misunderstand, I wasn't making the point that Street and Candid are just snapshots, it was more about the criteria that a quickly taken photograph with little planning isn't necessarily what could be called a snapshot.
By using a lot of the assumed criteria then I should think that Street and Candid photography are basically snapshots then, and some of the best photographs ever taken fall into that category.
Best option (as I see it and from the original question) is a pocketable camera that could take decent images automatically in P mode but would give the OP the opportunity to learn (if they wish) how to use a DSLR without lugging one around. In other words, begin to understand composition...
