I use a 150-500 for motorsport using a manfrotto gimbal atop an old alum manfrotto 190 heavy tripod..... system works well enough to pan with and I have also added a 1.4 converter if enough light as it does slow things down.

Do a trial run in the room with your one light and a softbox, ask a good friend to sit there while you shoot to get the right settings write em all down and note distance of light and seat from background.

Not all media phootographer are paid to be there, plus the insurance they have to have.
I agree, with long bursts its a waste but as I like sharp cars/bikes and blurred whels I have a wierd set up that works for me, a chair [dogy knees] an old tripod with a gimbal and a 150-500 lens...
I use a 150-500 sigma on a gimbal on a tripod... I can shoot if req with one hand and the gimbal will let me pan as i like........ no-one semms to have mentioned camera support.... I get a few strange looks but when a guy came next to me at the hairpin at Donnington.. he was shocked how close...
