Thanks - I have a set of Cokin ND grad filters on my shopping list! That will sort out the blown sky. Also, it was hot and a level grade so there isn't a wisp of smoke or steam - quite unusual for a steam loco!
My one succesful panning shot of a steam engine - the train was travelling at about 65mph (on the mainline near Cholsey, Oxfordshire) and I was standing about 100yards from the line - 1/30sec, c.85mm (Canon 70-200 f/4L), Canon 400d.

It's been a while since I posted anything on here, but I thought this one might interest some people. This picture has had absolutely no post processing - this is exactly what the lens saw (except colour saturation etc...) - it is a 100% crop.

Thanks - I do understand now! That makes sense. However, so far I haven't done such a crop as my photos look noisy at that resolution, so maybe I need to improve my technique and try and use as low an ISO as possible (is 100ISO low or high, I can never remember!). I shall play around and see...
At the risk of sounding a bit dim, what exactly does a 100% crop mean? Or 50%, or whatever - surely a 100% crop means the whole thing and therefore isn't a crop at all? Help!
Well, I'd be happy if I had taken those. Fabulous colours, especially the first, and I think having the sunflower colour subdued emphasises the colour of the frog. Well done!
I really like them - they give the impression of being a miniature landscape - it is quite deceiving as to the scale of the pictures, which makes me want to look longer at them.
Great set - superb colours in some of them. I like no 5 but I was wondering if it had two points of interest - the lighthouse and the post - one distracts from the other IMHO. Still ike the textures though.
