Canon EF 100-400mm - Alternative to OEM hood

I find the OEM hood (ET-83C) for the EF 100-400mm lens awkward to handle and would prefer a petal hood. The hood for my 24-105mm (an EW-83H) sort of fits, but in a cross-threaded kind of way, so I'm still on the lookout for a petal hood that will fit securely. I've read that the ET-83II fits...

Took this one of Drumadoon Point on Arran this year ... http://www.diccaldwell.co.uk/arran/2010/drumadoon.jpg Staff Edit: Please note that, although we now have an image resizer, people still need to be aware of their file sizes. Thank you.

Pentax Optio E85 - Captions in Picasa

Was helping a friend with her new Optio today and introduced her to Picasa as a simple and versatile image viewer/editor. Lo and behold, all the photos she'd taken so far with the Optio appeared in Picasa with the caption "PENTAX DIGITAL CAMERA". Kills the mood when running a slideshow...

    Slideshow Software

Picasa is free and will run decent slideshows. You can choose the transition effect and slide time, as well as an accompanying mp3 music track.

    HDR advice

Took my first HDR shots a month or so ago and still getting my head round it. Below is a shot I took of the Whitelee Windfarm south of Glasgow (largest in Europe). As I understand it, the camera's optimal exposure was always going to give an overexposed sky and underexposed foreground unless I...

    Will it take off?

This old chestnut ... :D A propeller driven aircraft pulls itself through the air and a jet powered craft pushes itself through the air. Prior to take off, as long as contact with the ground remains reasonably frictionless - in our example, that the wheel bearings can withstand any speed thrown...

Rejected passport photo - Possible to correct in photoshop?

I took some for my mother (against a magnolia painted wall) and they were rejected for being too dark. I could have tweaked them in PS but the Post Office had already sent her to the local photographer.

    1000D Failure

Sorry to hear about the problems, Scott. Fingers crossed it self-corrects or you can get it fixed.

Advice needed for a battery replacement purchase

Another vote for 7dayshop. I bought two of their batteries for my 1000D and they're performing fine. IMHO, you'd be a mug to pay full whack for the OEM batteries ...

Minimum shutter speed to avoid camera shake ...

Thanks for the advice. I need to get out and take some more shots in decent light and fast shutter speeds and assess the results. Hopefully at those speeds, shake will be (nearly) eliminated and any blur can be put down to poor focus, whether poor choice of AF mode or duff manual focusing.

Minimum shutter speed to avoid camera shake ...

Thanks for the comments. I wasn't really trying to establish my minimum handheld shutter speed rather identify a shutter speed above which camera shake could be ruled out. If I use my EF-S 55-250mm IS at 250mm, would 1/320th be fast enough to rule out camera shake if shooting a still subject?

Minimum shutter speed to avoid camera shake ...

Most noticeable on some of my moon shots, I've been having some problems recently with out of focus shots. I've read on here that it's difficult to generalise about the shutter speeds at which one can hand hold as some people simply have a steadier hand. However, I want to be certain that my...

Some cool time lapse and tilt/shift footage ...

I'm sure this has been posted on here before - I only joined at Christmas so apologies if it has - but it is pretty cool and worth another look. Someone on my Honda S2000 forum linked to this time lapse tilt/shift footage a while back and today he linked to this time lapse footage of Dubai. I...

    Mars and the Moon

So is the best bet to expose for the Moon and just see if Mars makes an appearance? Must admit I didn't appreciate how different in size they will appear.

    Mars and the Moon

It's looking like we might have clear skies up here tonight so I fancy having a go at this. I read somewhere that the best results will be with a 100mm lens (to keep both Mars and the Moon in the same frame), but does anyone have any advice on exposure settings?
