There have been a few opportunities to catch at least a few of them, but because the banks did not seem to take the complaints seriously it made it harder.
Well there is an issue. A distance selling auction relies on buyer/seller trust, without that how can it operate?
They need to create a safe/free payment alternative i.e. some kind of bank transfer escrow or not charge paypal fees for ebay sales
I don't think it is quite that clearcut, firstly eBay failed to act on clear violations of their TOS. i.e refusing to accept paypal. By forcing this issue after numerous complaints, many people would not have lost money, although eBay may have been more out of pocket.
When the scam did...
I was actually just informing my bank and asking them if they could do anything. Their response shows a lack of understanding to what went on. For example this person setup multiple bank accounts with the purpose of gaining money from people by deception and this is what he did. The company...
Its known as short-firm fraud, kind of similar to long-firm fraud.
With regards to the bargain prices, when the pound actual had some value you could buy some of these items from abroad for not much different. Also some people actually received the items as well. Which is also how the scam...
Well there is nothing new about this scam, but it does show that both PowerSeller status and good feedback are meaningless. In fact what is the point in the Power Seller status except to give buyers a false sense of security.
I read this on the group for the victims of the scam on eBay, I believe the information came from the police.
What I find more worrying is that the banks aren't actually taking this fraud seriously, I received a letter from my bank today regarding this
So someone opening multiple...
Supposedly there is around 15p for every £1 that people got ripped off left in the account and that is assuming that eBay don't get there cut first.
From what I heard they didn't freeze the account as soon as it was reported and a large amount £100,000+ was allowed to be withdrawn from the...
Just tell them you are from a police in India lol, how will they know the difference.
Anyway, join this group - http://groups.ebay.co.uk/clubforum.jspa?forumID=18000026316
There are plenty of other victims who can help you there.
I'm not sure the bank can be held responsible, I think as a group we might be able to hold eBay responsible, mainly from the fact the guy is a powerseller and they ignore numerous complaints about him dating back from September 2008.
Oh and yes, it is very big. It is a gang and the...
eBay are impossible to deal with over this, at the moment I can't get more than a copy'n'paste reply telling me that I need to try and resolve it with the seller. Supposedly they might have a genuine reason for example they have a computer problem or personal issues or they are just a dumbass...
No, its if they can't get the money back of the person you gave it to they only give a max of £500. If they got all the money back, you would get all the money back. Unfortunately you can withdraw money from paypal to your bank account in about 3-5 days in the UK, so usually by the time you...
Many of us have already gone to the police and there is already a fairly large police investigation regarding this.
If you have been ripped off by this guy, a group has been setup for victims to get together - http://groups.ebay.co.uk/clubforum.jspa?forumID=18000026316
At the moment I'm...
Yes, a lot of people still don't realize they have been scammed or don't know what to do because eBay are no use at all and just send automated replies to your emails. At least this way if people search for eportuk they are likely to find one of the threads. I have posted details of this scam...
The scam this gang committed is know as 'short-firm' fraud, where they build a reputation by selling high quality items at a discount, then when people trust them (i.e. powerseller status) they go for the sting. In eportuk's case he listed £400k's worth of items in a short space of time.
The...
