i have to give a short talk to 6/7 yr olds on photography, has anyone ever done this before? obviously i will have to keep it fairly simple just looking for a few pointers if anyone has any ideas on what sort of stuff to include.
thanks

If I was you, make it a practical talk, get them involved. Kids that age learn best when they are doing rather than listening.

Talk about the most important thing in photography...light.

Show them how light moves and creates shadows, harsh light and soft light. Get some props, table lamps, diffuser, funny model or shapes. Get them up there moving light back and forth or around the model.

This is enough to spark their interest, then if you get asked back you can expand on other areas.

One question, will parents be present at all?

I think one nice thing, if you could do it (I'm assuming group size wouldn't make it a problem), is a little, very basic leaflet or just an A4 sheet going over the main points as simply as possible. Just home printed, nothing expensive, but if a few are interested then they may treasure a little sheet to have a read of. I know they may need help but hopefully they will have a willing parent to help.

If parents are present, I can see you being asked about recommending cameras, or maybe even books, so it may be worth having literature on where to look, the differences in compacts vs basic bridge cameras, something just to help if possible.

I would stay as far as possible away from anything technical, and just focus on something very very colourful. Ie a butterfly or other cute animal. Both my kids LOVED cameras at that age once they got a few shots of those.

thanks for the comments some great advice as usual any more would be appreciated

message to the mods.....
i dont seem to be getting notification about replies to any thread i comment on or start
thanks

any ideas on what to concentrate on, im thinking holding the camera still when pressing the shutter, making sure the object of the pic is in focus, having the flash set to auto ( just in case of low light and they still get a good pic) any other ideas would be welcome.

Composition. Can make or break a photo and is the easiest thing to understand. Talk about the rule of thirds

I couldn't disagree more. Bugger the rules :)

Composition is an extraordinarily complex subject and completely outwith the scope of this exercise. Trying to teach it to seven year olds would bore them to tears in much less than the allotted time. Besides which, as you'd know if you've ever handed your camera to a small person, kids are inherently creative and will come up with compositions that you'd never think of in a million years.

I'd second what these guys say:

I'd try very hard to avoid giving 'a talk'. If you're standing up and talking to them, seven year olds have the attention span of a bored goldfish. If it was me, I'd divide them up into groups, give each group a really simple camera and set them an assignment. If you can bring along a printer or a projector so they can each print out their favourite for an impromptu critique afterwards, so much the better.

I'm with Charlotte on this one. Keep it simple, get them involved, hands on and let them use their creativity with a minimum of rules and try to find a way of showing them their results and allow them to critique on another's results.
